Back page of the Craven Herald in the Craven Diary. Regarding the HS2 proposal that work may start during the next decade with a final completion date when trains will first run of maybe 2032 -33. It's pointed out that the 72 miles of the Settle - Carlisle line which traverses some of the most inhospitable countryside rising to a summit of 1,169ft featuring 14 tunnels and 22 viaducts, including the magnificent Ribble Head viaduct was completed in just six years in the late 19th century. All this with a workforce of 6,000 navvies with pick, shovel, dynamite and wheelbarrow.

Update:
At last months meeting you asked a question about surface drainage problems occurring on two ginnels which had recently been improved by Pendle Council. The Engineering and Special Projects Manager is not aware of any previous reports of these issues but the Countryside Access Officer will visit the site in the near future to investigate the problem. This site visit will be scheduled to take place during wet weather so that the drainage problems can be observed, and any works which are necessary to rectify the problem can be ordered. This will be reported to Councillors at the next meeting on Tuesday.

Chris Huhne admitting guilt at the trial but then standing on the steps and trying to minimise the damage by saying he 'was admitting to something that happened ten years ago' and not apologising for lying for those ten years. In that ten years he has lost his marriage, his family and his political career. (
LINK) The question arises, WHY?. Was he just maximising his salary and pension fund? Did he actually think the system would protect him because he was too important to be prosecuted? Did he realise that by denying a relatively unimportant motoring offence he was doing even more damage to the public perception of politicians. This has gone on for far too long and you have to wonder why those with the power to influence him didn't take him on one side and give him the hard word. Or were they simply too weak/corrupt/polite to take executive action?
I hope his wife's defence that she was subjected to 'marital coercion' succeeds and that he gets a gaol sentence. He placed her in an impossible position and was completely selfish. Not a nice man.......
The PAC criticises the decisions taken by the Coalition when they altered the specification of the fighters to be used on the new carriers in very quick decisions taken in private. They then changed their minds but by that time millions extra had been wasted on what was already a flawed project. Remember Godron taking a last minute decision before he lost power to build two carriers and make sure the contract locked the government into building at least one in his constituency?

Chris Huhne deserves all he gets.
Bloody 'ell it was only a speeding ticket....
I wouldn't like to make the decision on plain jet vs jump jet. Cheaper carrier and dearer planes, or dearer carrier and cheaper planes. Getting the carriers at minimum cost was high on Godrons decision to go with jump jet, now, when it comes to buying the planes.....
I'd have favoured fitting the carriers with the kit to handle plain jets, and carrying both types of plane, but that's the most expensive option.
Like so much in politics, you can't win.

"I'd have favoured fitting the carriers with the kit to handle plain jets, and carrying both types of plane, but that's the most expensive option". I agree with that Pluggy, they are getting around that one by building two different carriers:- HMS Queen Elizabeth will be a conventional carrier, flush decked and equiped with STOL Aircraft (short take off or landing), Lockheed Martin Lightning. HMS Prince of Wales is to be fitted with a "Ski Ramp" and will operate VTOL aircraft (jump jets). The choice of US aircraft is because we do not build STOL planes, the BAE Eurofighter Typhoon or the Tornado would require a catapult, only practical on steam powered ships, the two new carriers will each be powered by two Rolls Royce Trent MT30 Marine Gas Turbines, each delivering 48.000 HP.

The final re3port on the failings of the Mid Staffordshire health trust is published today and the government is to appoint a Chief Inspector for hospitals for the whole of the NHS. About time and I hope he/she has teeth and can get to grips with the failings in the CQC particularly.
A Parliamentary committee has criticised the Justice Ministry for it's handling of the privatisation of court translation services. Again, about time. This has been a shambles since the old system was ditched and many good translators refused to work for the new providers because of the low wages on offer. Private Eye has been banging on about this for months. Has somebody been reading their articles?

That creep Nicholson giving an interview in which he said he was best placed to implement Francis recommendations..... I suspect his days as an NHS supremo are numbered. If not, why not!

I have been watching a Coal Tit which is feeding in the garden and keeps flying at the front window. It is one of a pair, the other is not exhibiting the behaviour. It does not appear to be distressed in any way but It was doing it for about 10 minutes or more?
