The Johnstown Flood occurred on Friday, May 31, 1889, after the catastrophic failure of the South Fork Dam, located on the south fork of the Little Conemaugh River, 14 miles upstream of the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Wikipedia
Deaths: 2,209 or 2,208
Property damage: $17 million (about $484 million today)

Exactly right Kev and as it was a failure of a dam I expected Peter to be on it like a flash but he must have missed the topic this time round.
Now we need another one!

I was too busy gardening while there was a break between days of torrential rain and hailstorms!

I saw lots of them when I was in the 'badlands' of Arizona and New Mexico. The dust (or stubble) allows you to follow the thermals. They are nice to watch and if you let one pass over you it is only a gentle breeze.

I've seen them in this country China in the hayfield, especially when the weather was a bit catchy.

Would it be called a drift? For putting on 'pins' before knocking them out. Forgotten what you call them but you are always making these pin-thingi-ma-bobs in Shed Matters. The handle is so someone can hold it in place whilst someone-else clouts it with a sledge hammer!

Ahhh! That garden game that Drake played? Hoops and mallets and balls. A croquet mallet? Did I get there in the end?

Unfortunately no China. The wrong Tally Ho! The one you are looking for is a century old pilot cutter. But the fact we are talking sailing ships should be enough.

Drake was reputed to be playing bowls not croquet! Never was any good at anything that happened more than 5 minutes ago!
A caulking hammer/mallet?

Bloody hell China, that came from left field! Yes, dead right, it's a caulking mallet and that design developed over the years as the best design for the repetitive movement when caulking for hours at a time.
Right, come up with the next one! I'm off into the shed.
