Gus posted this image of the Long Ing area. This was before the old canal bridge was replaced by the present one. There's another relic on here as well. If you look at the corner of the field in the middle distance, at the bottom of the lamp post there is a milk stand. It used to be used for the kits of milk from Long Ing Farm and the milk wagon picked them up from there every morning.

Old water board offices in about 1980. This building has always puzzled me because it has grey sale roof (Stone slates) which usually denotes a building before about 1870 in Barlick but this would put the build before Barlick had public water.

We had a right battle to get the owner of the old waterboard offices to renovate them a few years ago. I recall having the issue on the agenda at each monthly meeting of the local area committee and almost as frequent site visits and meetings with the owners to chivvy progress.

Sometimes, such projects are 'hospital jobs' that builders resort to when there's no paid work for them.

It always surprises me that people are willing to let a building sit unused and costing money rather than do summat with it and get some money coming in.

There are a surprising number of empty houses around (some of them empty for donkeys years) which the owners just neglect to the dismay of neighbours and the neighbourhood.

This was the view from my bedroom window when I was a teenager. I hasten to add that it’s nearly the view, in case anyone was wondering why Gus was taking photos from my house. I remember the hump back bridge well - used to watch out for my boyfriend driving over it. His car headlights would briefly reflect in the mirror on the back wall, so I knew exactly when he’d turn up.

David, we had an 'Eyesores' topic on the old platform and the water-board offices was one of them. Perhaps we ought to start it up again......

Old postcard of Long Ing c.1900. No Barnsey or Moss Sheds, Long Ing Shed chimney having a good puther and on the horizon the stack at new Coates Mill. The canal bridge on the right is the entrance to the Little Cut that served Rainhall Rock quarry. Barnsey Farm and cottages still there as are the cottages in Long Ing shed yard.

There's still a water pipe in the hedge just below the site.

Image

The war memorial when it was on Letcliffe. Bit disorientating because the layout was changed later and a separate garden made round it but that's the men's shelter on the right and the lawn was used as a putting green, trees planted there now.
