Sorry no. Are you sitting comfortably? The local dialect term for a sow that is served by a boar is that it is 'brimmed'.

Never heard that term before. Now I can stop searching the Internet for "mating pigs" - I bet I get some lovely follow-up from the search engines!

Have a look at THIS Google result. It was there all the time.....

I couldn't bring it to mind, but I had a feeling I'd know it, when revealed.

I was right.

PS. If you believe in reincarnation - try to aim at returning as a thoroughbred stallion. I had the guided tour at The National Stud in Newmarket once. Hard to fault it really - best of everything and the pick of the country's fillies three times a day in the season.

Dream on David, neither of us would qualify on breeding or stamina!

Unfortunately Google is crippled here, I have to rely on Bing and that didn't come up with the right answer.
That was a good mystery subject. :good:

Try this - I don't expect anyone to get it, but I just like it - and on here it's on for posterity.

It's part of a work that's about 10ft square.

PS I now find it has been 'posteritised' already so I won't drag it out.

If Bob Bliss can memorialise, I can posteritise.

Agreed. I think they are wonderful, and they brighten up every visit to Addenbrookes Hospital.

I like the sources of the fragments, 'friendly builders' are one of them.

Wendy posted this pic of sheep sheltering under a wall. Occasionally you'll see an isolated piece of wall in the middle of an exposed field to give some shelter from the weather. What's the dialect name for them around here?

Sorry no, what we are looking for is a dialect word for shelter. So instead of a 'shelter wall' it's a '* wall'.

Laithe? There are farms named things like Bent Laithe but I've no idea what the word laithe means.

Nor me! I don't think it's the word Stanley is looking for though.

I've never heard that one Gloria. Wendy is going to kick herself because I am sure she knows this. The word is beald. The wall in the centre of the field is a beald wall.
I've had a furtle, they spell it differently but here's the Collins definition....
" (bield ) Scottish and Northern England dialect
noun, 1. a shelter; house
verb 2. to shelter or take shelter
Word origin
Old English bieldo, byldo boldness (hence: refuge); related to Gothic balthei, Old English beald bold"

I don't understand how their etymology works but bield or beald, take your pick is the word.
