China! So sorry, I missed your post, senior moment and of course you're right. Cathy, very widely used by many people for security especially in the days before envelopes when you simply folded a letter and sealed the join. Here's another for you.

First World War Victory Medal

Is it a first World War service medal? Can't remember which one of the medals had this design before were they not called Pip, Squeak and Wilfred? I did some research for a friend whose father had one of these and also Military Medal which was issued I believe to the ranks as they couldn't be awarded the Military Cross only officers got them. You're both right. I knew it would be easy but I posted it for a reason. I found it in some rubbish many years ago. On the rim it is inscribed '13816 Pte A Broome. Lanc Fus' I've contacted the Lancashire Fusiers twice, once last week, and offered them the medal but never had a reply. I know Ian is interested in these things, if you'd like it, call in and you can have it with pleasure. Oh, by the way, I tried looking him up bout got some very confusing and inconsistent results....

With regards to the medal:
Pte Arthur Broome 13816 Lancashire Fusiliers. 11th Battalion
Joined up 25/9/1915, received Victory, British & Star medals. A note on his medal roll index card says "Kin A 8-10-15".
However on the list of Soldiers who died in the Great War on Ancestry his date of death is given as 8/10/1918.
He was born in Heywood about 1894, the son of Thomas & Mary Ann Broome who live in 12 Stotts Place off Hamers Lane Rochdale (1911 census).
Enlisted in Rochdale, served in Flanders and was killed in action.

It looks like the drawing pencils used by our drawing office, press the top and the leads come down like a propelling pencil. Lift the top and there's an eraser Eileen

A clutch scriber for scribing lines on metal.

Gloria is close enough. It's a propelling pencil but with one vital difference, instead of a pencil lead it's a cylinder of ceramic carbide, one of the hardest substances known to man. Used for scribing lines on metal and works where a normal hardened steel scriber won't touch the surface. Try this one.....
