At first I thought it was your empty wine glass but changed my mind!

A spring retaining cap. slip it over a central pin which has a flat on it, compress the spring, turn the cap. and hey presto.

Bugger! Dead right, tell them what is notable about it and then set the next one!
In Malaya and Indonesia they say "durian jatuh sarung naik".
► Show Spoiler
"the durian falls and the sarong comes up"
I can't vouch for this personally you understand.

None of you are right, I’ll leave it a bit longer, struggling to think of a clue.

The 'cloth' in the pic looks to be denim. Is it clothing related? A rivet from a pair of jeans or is it bigger than that?

Haha, the denim is my jeans, I have the object wedged between my knees so you cant see the whole of it.

I know what it is and why it's connected with Tolkien. A related species has been in the news here because the first one in the UK was found in Surrey recently and it's a threat to our crops. But I'll let other members have a go at pinning it down (pun intended!).
