I heard that.... and 'only' 71 as well. Sorry I can't help it but I compare all the ages of the deceased with my own.....I know, but believe me it's automatic when you get closer to 90!

The Vicar from Dad's Army has died aged 90 years.

My claim to fame - I went to the historic Hastings Chess Congress a long time ago, (bucket list ticked), and whilst waiting for the start had a coffee at the next table to him. He was in the panto upstairs.

My memory of him is so strong. The characters in Dad's Army became part of the fabric of our lives didn't they. Especially Old Farts like me who could remember the Crazy Gang!

Grand Master Igor Naumkin aka Burger King from the Moscow Chess Club has died suddenly in Italy.

Igor 'Gennad'evič Naumkin (in Russian: Игорь Геннадьевич Наумкин ?; Moscow, 10 August 1965 - Asti, 13 July 2022 [1]) was a Russian chess player, Grandmaster.


Plaques will know of him - probably no one else. He rarely lost in the games I saw,

.I only saw him lose two games. He had a very distinctive playing style slow and very deliberate movements for blitz games. He seemed quite happy to play some of the younger players on an equal basis.

See THIS BBC obituary for James Lovelock who died on his 103rd birthday. He was perhaps the biggest single driver of the need to recognise climate change and do something about it.

In the early days his Gaia theory was laughed at by the more conservative scientists but eventually they too began to understand his meaning and it became what we now refer to as Earth Science or Earth Systems and is taught in schools and universities. For almost all of his career he has been independent, working from his home workshop and funded on contracts from large organisations such as NASA. He's always been a practical man and made his own apparatus - you can see some of it here: Science Museum

Good Oldham lad of course - another graduate of Oldham Rep, and by coincidence (borderline spooky) I watched a Youtube video of him doing a comic song (which he made a good job of), in a music hall setting only a couple of days ago.

Even I have been surprised at the revelations about the length and range of his long career, I'd forgotten the 'Right said Fred' type of stuff. I like old British films - one such was 'Two way Stretch', and his version of 'Dangerous Davies' has been on TV a couple of times recently.

He was good wasn't he? Superb comedy timing, and wonderfully un - woke

RIP Lt. Uhurah, in that role she set a couple of records. She was the first black female to represent a position of authority and also the first to engage in an interracial kiss on US television. :good:

Thanks Ian. Yes her voice was beautiful and unique.
Judith and The Seekers were/are much loved here in Australia.
The Seekers made it to #1 in the UK and America as well.
