This article popped up in the Woodlesford & Oulton History Facebook group today ( where my parents lived in Leeds) and the name Blenkinsop rang a bell. This locomotive was a Mystery Object not long since but what caught my attention was the connection to Sir John Lister Kay.

Reported all day on BBC R4 Peter.
Interesting piece Wendy. I knew the Lister Kayes were a big family but didn't know about that connection.

I believe that the family decamped to Denby Grange after Thornton Manor was burnt down in the Civil War and never returned.

Interesting article Wendy. Would the Listers be related to the Listers of Gentleman Jack fame near Halifax?

Shuttleworth was part of the same family?

What has struck me for the last few says as I sit and watch the world go by while supervising parking in Albert Road is that the sight of a woman in a skirt or dress is rare these days, at least it is in these days of cool days and wind chill. Average of one a day.....

The late Keith Waterhouse covered the subject in his Mirror / Mail? column a long time ago. He had a name for the annual first appearance of ladies in summer dresses. He used to mention it every year. It had two words - was alliterative and the second word was Tuesday.
Strangely I find no reference to it at all from google.

I commented on this subject to Mrs P a couple of weeks ago. Two young very fashionable ladies in what we would consider longish dresses. We wondered if this was the start of a new fashion. Makes a change from women wearing tights that make you shake your head as they wobble past.

I watched the 1955 version of Dambuster's today, the one with Richard Todd as Guy Gibson. Shocked to find that some aspects of the film regarding Guy's black Labrador dog have been changed! All usages of his name have been overdubbed to "Trigger"!
Now in film and TV I recognise Trigger as either Roy Roger's trusted steed or Roger Lloyd Pack's street sweeper character in Only Fools and Horses, "alright Dave" as he always referred to Rodney.

Certainly not the proper name of Guy Gibson's black Labrador. I am also fairly certain that in the closing scenes of the film it used to show a marker erected on the dogs resting place with his name on it, that seems to have also been expunged from the film. Probably harder and more expensive to change that so they have just dumped it.
The plot gets even worse, apparently in a modern remake of the film where Guy's black Labrador is now portrayed as "Digger".
It's a tale based on factual events which includes the demise of Guy Gibson's black Labrador.

The day will come Ian when the use of animals in films will be unacceptable.... They haven't given their consent....
I noticed that a lot of money had been spent in fantasy land in London yesterday....
I also note that tomorrow is a Bank Holiday. You'd think we could afford all this expense.....

The Times, having successfully completed its investigations into the Tavistock Centre and persuading children to change their `gender identity ' etc has moved on to the businesses being set up to fund sex education in schools. There aren't enough teachers to teach it and that's created opportunities for various campaigners to take over and make money whilst pushing forward their own agenda. That's bad enough when it's teaching older children but now they've moved in to the primaries and are encouraging very young children to `explore their sexuality' and be `adventurous', and teaching them about anal sex, for example. Parents are not surprisingly up in arms because they weren't given any warning that their kids were being taught these things.
There is obviously a danger here in that the people doing the teaching are not regulated and don't have certificates etc. But it raises another problem. In Florida, the Republican governor Ron De Santis has taken up the fight against sex education for children on behalf of parents and he's getting a lot of support which will help him in his attempt to be a Trump-type candidate in the next US Presidential election. He's more extreme - he's against sex education in all schools and colleges at all levels. He's also anti-gay, anti-abortion etc. If we're not careful we in Britain might get caught on this slippery slope and find populist politicians adopting the same tactics - becoming culture war warriors and stirring up support among the public.

"If we're not careful we in Britain might get caught on this slippery slope and find populist politicians adopting the same tactics - becoming culture war warriors and stirring up support among the public."
A very real danger Peter I reckon.
I know this is the worst argument against it but nobody ever mentioned sex to us apart from persuading us it was dirty and that 'VD kills!' as advertised in every public toilet. Despite this we grew up to lead normal happy lives.
Remember what Mark Twain said....
"Soap and education are not as sudden as a massacre, but they are more deadly in the long run"
Perhaps our lack of education in these matters was a good thing....

See
THIS BBC report on the trial of Donald Trump on Charges of rape.
A New York jury found that Trump sexually abused and defamed former columnist E Jean Carroll in a civil trial Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a Manhattan department store nearly 30 years ago
The jury did not find Trump liable for rape Trump was also found liable for defamation over claims from October 2022 that Carroll's accusation was "a hoax and a lie" In total, the jury ordered Trump to pay $5m (Β£4m) in damages to Carroll Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said the ex-president will appeal the verdict. Carroll's team hailed the verdict as a victory and said "today the world finally knows the truth"
I have only one comment. Well done the US justice system.

I've just done the 14 mile round trip to Barnoldswick Waste Recycling Centre with a car load of glass, plastic and cans to recycle, queued outside for half an hour while a lorry was 'manoeuvring' only to find that it had been taking away the skip I needed! Grrrr! Sainsbury's in Colne don't seem to have the Recycling service they used to.

It's a bit of a ride out but I've been using the Burnley Recycling Centre on the Heasandford Industrial Estate. It's open 7 days a week and I've not had to queue yet.

We are hoping to get a recycling collection organised at long last, but after receiving an email from Pendle about a month back saying we would get bins and a schedule everything has gone quiet!
It is a bit of a trip to Burnley, I would have to combine it with a trip to Townley Garden Centre....Hmm that's an idea!

Barlick Aldi have taken out two manned checkouts and replaced them with 6 self service terminals. They are taped off yet but will shortly come into service. I noticed that the tannoy voice announcements have also changed, sounds like a different announcer, probably part of the software upgrade to integrate the new checkouts.
