WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Talking to one of the volunteers at the Samaritans Book stall (Colne Market Hall) he told me the Samaritans will be moving into the Poundland shop next door to Boots in Hartley Square. The move will take place at the end of June when Poundland closes.
The Samaritans book shop is one of the must visit shops in Colne. Now you know its on the move please keep this charity going.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I think I reported a few weeks ago somewhere that the AA, out of the blue sent me two membership cards for their gold roadside relay service to which we used to subscribe. I cancelled the AA a few years ago when I got RAC cover as part of my motor insurance policy. The cards only had about three weeks of cover on them, apparently when I cancelled I still had some minor credit on the account.
Last week they rang me on my mobile to take my renewal instruction and card details. I told them then that I had relinquished my membership about four years ago and had cover from the RAC. That put that one to bed.
I received a letter from them yesterday with renewal documents for my gold roadside relay which I have told them I don't need or want! They only want £224.00 for the renewal.
That's just about what I pay for my fully comprehensive motor insurance policy which includes RAC cover. The original lure they used was a very small worm.

My Natwest bank account now has the AA as part of the 'package'. It was Greenflag.

Just been to Tesco. The roads are crazy busy so I didn't relish the prospect.
I must mention that all the tills were 'personned' by very pleasant humans and fewer people were using the DIY checkouts. I was served immediately. Has the fight back begun? Hope so.
The only downside was that I looked at the '' grab a free book' shelf and chose The Colditz Story and an impressive thick volume just called 'Stanley' . How could I resist? The explorer you understand not our hero.
Got home and found I'd picked up the wrong book and instead of 'Stanley' I have the biography of Ian Wright the footballer.
Oh dear. . . .

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
That was my laugh of the day. Thank you Mr Trippier!
What attracted my attention was the look on the lady's face in the Artisan Bakers when I told her the price of her small pork pie (£1.75) was too much and I couldn't afford it. I had gone in for one in a spirit of enquiry, I wanted to see if they were any better than Brown's which I can get from Barlic Bites for £1.20. (Yes, they have had to put them up....) I think I was supposed to be polite and pay up, after all that's the 'British way' isn't it!

A large man has just installed a small battery free of charge!
It has cured the problem so if you hear of anyone else getting too closely acquainted with their American Megatrends programme, you can tell them the solution.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?

For information and reference, I noticed they stock the batteries at the Coop.

Ian
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
They do indeed, I bought one once for a radio trigger (for remote operation of studio lighting). They were quite expensive which is why I bought a pack of them (CR2032) elsewhere, it was either Aldi or Lidl.
I'm sure we can discuss reasonable rates if anyone needs one, I'm not going to need that many

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
The CR2032 `button' battery is used in our car key, as we found out when the car flashed up a big warning after a comfort stop in the middle of our journey back from Cornwall on the weekend. We bought a 2-pack on the way and then found we have lots of them at home!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
See THIS BBC report about a spy satellite lunch by North Korea which failed.
North Korea has said an accident happened as it planned to send up its first space satellite, causing it to crash into the sea. Pyongyang announced earlier it planned to launch a satellite by 11 June to monitor US military activities. It now says it will attempt a second launch as soon as possible. The launch sparked a false alarm in the South Korean capital Seoul, while in Japan a warning was issued to residents of Okinawa, in the south. There was chaos and confusion in Seoul as people awoke to the sound of an air raid siren and an emergency message telling them to prepare for an evacuation - only to be told 20 minutes later it had been sent in error.

Apropos nothing at all - I found out today that Frankel's stud fee has gone up, and is now a staggering
Thanks to a masterclass guided tour of the National Stud in Newmarket, about fifteen years ago, I learned that this can be earned three times a day in the covering season. Now that's serious money. . . .

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
That's the Ukraine equivalent of what fell on us day and night in the first 18 months of the war in Stockport Peter. Quite a low chance of being hit but still a problem!
That's a glimpse into a different world David. I've told my tale about taking Jim Baird's mare to Horsborough for covering and saw the amount of nervous and physical effort expended. I'd hesitate to impose that on an asset as valuable as Frankel three times a day..... I've no doubt the stallion could be up for it but it would drag him down I think if regular.
(I doubt if the owners are worrying about the gas bill....
)
( A few minutes later an old saying came to mind:- "Muck to t'midden!")

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I'm appalled by this story. I've known about the development and use of veg oils for inclusion in jet engine fuels but pig fat?
And again, it's all `greenwash' because burning plant oils or animal fats still releases CO2 into the atmosphere, albeit slightly less that with petrol and diesel. Perhaps we should render down some of the aviation executives to power their industry!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I had the same reaction Peter. Yet another example of a cunning wheeze that takes no notice of what the wider repercussions will be. These cunning plans should be stopped in their tracks. They are going to result in more land locked into Palm Oil production which is the only source to make up for the shortages this will cause in other industries.
A similar problem arises from 'carbon credits' that rely on the benefits of tree planting. It is creating havoc in the market for land formerly used for producing food. We are sterilising it for at least a hundred years. I keep warning about the fact that I can see food shortages coming down the line and the politicians don't seem to realise you can't just switch back into food production. It's nowhere near as simple as that.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
THIS BBC report grabbed me this morning. Just when you thought it was safe to come out.....
While they are being promoted around the world as a crucial weapon in reducing carbon emissions, solar panels only have a lifespan of up to 25 years. Experts say billions of panels will eventually all need to be disposed of and replaced. "The world has installed more than one terawatt of solar capacity. Ordinary solar panels have a capacity of about 400W, so if you count both rooftops and solar farms, there could be as many as 2.5 billion solar panels.," says Dr Rong Deng, an expert in solar panel recycling at the University of New South Wales in Australia. According to the British government, there are tens of millions of solar panels in the UK. But the specialist infrastructure to scrap and recycle them is lacking. Energy experts are calling for urgent government action to prevent a looming global environmental disaster. "It's going to be a waste mountain by 2050, unless we get recycling chains going now," says Ute Collier, deputy director of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Is it just a scare story or is there a real and present danger here?
