Is it one of the `other' species such as Neanderthal, or `the hobbit' (Homo floriensis)?

No Peter. It was rather the evidence it gave of activities that today would be beyond the pale.
Clue Adrian Targett is connected with it......

Piltdown man?
That was my thought, but I looked at google, and decided it probably wasn't. It probably will be though now.

Ian's near enough. The skull was found in Gough Cave in the Cheddar Gorge which was where Cheddar man was found whose mitochondrial DNA matched the headmaster of the local school, Mr Targett. The archaeologists think the skull was used as a cup and other evidence of human bones with butchering marks on them led them to believe that there was evidence of cannibalism.
What can you tell me about this?

A google reverse image search will reveal the identity of this object easily - but let's see if anyone knows what it is without searching!

Looks a bit lethal to me.
Just a wild guess, is it for picking coals out of steam engines?

Looks as though it would be handy if there was a Cobra in your kitchen!

Sorry Gloria, not for coals.
You're getting close Stanley but not for cobras and not in specifically in kitchens.

Used by a dog catcher for capturing a stray dog?

A clever suggestion Panbiker and I guess it could be used for that. But Stanley's on the money - it's a pair of dog tongs for catching a dog. I was going to ask where they were used because the pair that I saw mentioned in a magazine article (and triggered my search on google for a pic) were used for something very specific in the 1600s but really they could be used anywhere. The specific use that caught my attention was for `removing troublesome dogs during the church service'!

Bloody hell Tom, where have you been? Yes you're right and to save a lot of hassle I saw it in San Francisco. We left town the following day so I didn't see it moved but it's a big building and yes, they were moved on a regular basis. Made slightly easier so they tell me by the fact they are built of timber.
Next one?
