Having read where Wendy has walked today, is it Lister Well?

It's not Lister Well but I knew it looked familiar as I have visited it when we stayed in Old Glossop. It's not there either it's at the Plague Village of Eyam which we took a trip out to. It's a year or two since so I had to look it up to refresh my memory, name wouldn't come.

A stoneware jug?

It seems to have a lot of small holes around the neck. Is it a fancy `watering can' device? You fill it with water then turn it upside down to sprinkle water on your plants. But there would need to be another hole somewhere to let air in to replace the water.

It's a stoneware jug and yes, liquid is part of the answer but it's very specific and neither of you has it yet. Sorry......

I've seen tankards like this. You fill them with beer and ask someone to drink the beer. It all spills from the holes in the neck. But there is a small hole under the handle and covering this means the beer can be drunk as normal. So a bit of a joke vessel.

Exactly right Graham, it's a puzzle jug. There are many variations but all essentially as you describe.

Patterson, New Jersey. 'In 1913 it was known as the Nag's Head and was where the striking silk mill workers held their meetings' quote courtesy of Tizer :good:

Near enough Kev. During the 1913 Silk workers strike the IWW held their meeting there. See THIS for an article on the Industrial Workers of the world.

A fly catcher?

Sorry Peter, no. Note the design element that means it can be stretched and released, this is important to its function.

I'm presuming it's being held in the 'open' position and it will close to a ball when released. Is it an over engineered serving spoon?

I think you're right about the position it is shown in Kev. No, it's not a serving spoon. Sorry....

That's why it's a fly catcher. You hold it up and squeeze to make it open then as the fly flies through you let it snap shut! Take it outside and free the fly. :extrawink:

Mrs Tiz reckons it's a whisk.
