Ian was right, old fashioned lead fuse wire. Very old, I reckon they date from the 1920s....

I don't know what a 'carbide tip' is but it looks like a scraper of some sort to me.

You are all on the verge.... You need overnight clues. Note the hole in the extension at the top. Concentrate on it containing oil.
