I've just heard an interview with a lady who runs a large fruit farm and a man who runs a big commercial laundry in London. They both had the same message, that their businesses were seriously threatened by a shortage of workers. The laundry owner said it wasn't just underpayment, he knew of one housekeeping job where the wage had risen from £9 to £15 and there were no takers. The job was seen as menial....
The lady finished by saying "The Government is presiding over chaos in the food and agricultural sector". That sounds about right!

People are now seeing about 42% of their income disappear in taxes and that will rise when the NI goes up. Those who have been to university and then into a job and have to pay back the loans for the uni course will be seeing 50% disappear.

Which is exactly why I decided to go for early retirement in 2004. I was sick of earning good money and watching half of it disappear in taxation of one form or another.

I like the way China uses a progressive income tax model that increases the % tax taken in 7 steps as income increases and highest rate is about 13 times the lowest. Our politicians could learn something from that.

I still pay income tax in UK and not China. So long as I spend a month outside China in every 5 year period then I can avoid paying tax in China. To be honest, this rule isn't enforced. Last time I checked, my tax liabilities would be about the same whether I paid in China or UK.

Well that does it. I can let one spooky event slip but not two in the same day on different subjects. Just started Terry Pratchett's book 'A Slip of the Keyboard' a series of short reflections on events in his career as a writer. Easy reading but helps if you're a Discworld fan.

I'm getting a different mental image, Friedman, Reagan and thatcher (Backed up by the Mad Monk.) agreeing that the market was the best governor of fortunes.
As I said elsewhere, God help us if we are to be ruled by the vagaries of the market.

They have this procession of favoured words in the spin department and at the moment it's 'doubling down'. Add it to 'working day and night', 'working at pace' etc. Meaningless phrases but sound impressive...
Come to think that just about sums this government up, much sound and fury signifying nothing.

Drove over into the industrial estate in Padiham yesterday. Fagan & Whalley the Businesses will always adjust to market conditions but generally in a depressed market it means contraction and a loss of jobs, Then how do you stop this downward spiral?

Oh dear, Justice Secretary Dominic Raab doesn't know what the word misogyny means. Speaking to the BBC, he said "insults and misogyny is absolutely wrong whether it's a man against a woman or a woman against a man". Not surprising then there were some sharp comments...

Labour's shadow justice secretary David Lammy said: "No wonder the Conservatives are hopeless at tackling violence against women and girls."

Liberal Democrat equalities spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said: "It's little wonder the Conservatives are failing to tackle misogyny when their justice secretary doesn't even seem to know what it is. These comments are an insult to the millions of women and girls impacted by misogyny and show just how out of touch the Conservatives are on this issue. Women and girls deserve better than these callous remarks."

I think he only said it to get into One Guy's prestigious 'Quote of the Day' spot.

He knew he would be a shoo in for it - nothing surer. Perhaps he was off sick on the day they did the topic when he was at either Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, or later Jesus College, Cambridge for his Master's law degree.

When he handed in his exam paper he probably said `I may not have fully understood the significance of that'!

If my memory serves me correctly he's not much good at geography either....

..and isn't sure whether or not `the sea was closed' when he was on holiday!
