Wendy, the main material available for trench art was shell cases. That's why it is often called 'shell art'. These are always brass so if an article isn't brass you can almost certainly dismiss it being trench art.
I'm quite sure it's brass but the base is plain with no markings.
Well that doesn't take us much further forward. Most of North Africa is a good source of craft metal work objects. My best guess would be commercial rather than trench - it looks a bit elaborate and 'touristy' for a squaddy to have made? Just my thoughts.
Be good to know though. . . . .

Didn't jump out at me as trench art either David. I suspect you're right, more like a tourist souvenir.
Try this one.... What's this?

Itβs beautiful, is it the workings of an ornate clock?

Remembering the lathe that Jonny Pickles made for making broaches that is sat in your front room I think its something similar for ornamental turning with loads of cams etc under the base to give different patterns.

Now now, It's a serious question. The answer has been mentioned on the site frequently. Why were they in the engine house? Clue, have a furtle round Edmund Gartside......

Big board meetings at the end of each year where the captains of industry drool over what the lower orders are allowed to see. How the odd less steamy pictures finished up in the engine room is another story.

Tom's right, they are the Shiloh Calendar ladies. All in very good taste. Edmund Gartside, CEO of Shiloh Spinners was tickled when I told him I had them all and yes he said that the selection meeting of the Board was a very tense affair!
Next for shaving?
