Bowl of potato, peas and stewed wether for dinner. Just a meat pie for tea with the crust of the old loaf toasted and then plenty of fruit.

Finished the potato soup and stewed meat for dinner and had two small butties with pressed beef on for tea. During the day I had a piece of meat arguing with onions and garlic on the stove as I watched the snooker. I added peas and by evening it was totally integrated and ready for eating today.

Had steak pudding, chips & mushy peas last night - tonight is slow cooked brisket with carrots, cauliflower cheese, yorkshire pudding, roast & new potatoes (we like the potato variation Maz!!) washed down witha bottle of Rioja.

One of the good things about a good meat and onion stew is that it makes brilliant sandwich filling. So, Stew butties X 2 for dinner and tea. I had a nice piece of well hung braising steak so I put it in a casserole with onions and seasoning and popped it on the stove for a few hours in the evening. I have no objection to good cooking smells with my leisure time! Looking good and it's sat in the fridge as I speak.....

No real interest in cooking yesterday. So chip and deep fried carrot butty for dinner and a single slice of toast with mackerel in tomato sauce with a topping of grated cheddar cheese grilled until the cheese melted.

The brisket, which cost £8, has done 4 meals for the two of us - hot on Sunday, cold on Monday, cottage pie on Tuesday & Potato hash yesterday - £2 per meal!! I have some skirt beef & veggies cooking in the slow cooker for tonight. Good job it was an easy tea last night - the electric power went off at 1.00pm - we had lights but not power. When the electrician arrived he found the kettle had tripped it and it was not even switched on!! So been for a new kettle this morning.

I enjoyed my deep fried carrots so much yesterday that I repeated the chip and carrot butty for dinner and used the last carrot for Carrot, chips and five small fish fingers plus peas and a couple of poached eggs on top. Sounds a lot but only a small bowl and I have to say, my sort of food!
Butcher's day today......

Two small sausage and egg butties for dinner. Put the rump steak on a bed of onions and garlic and let it simmer all afternoon on the stove. Tea was two small steak butties with onions and gravy, lovely! Enough steak and onion left for two meals today. As Moh says, good meat is cheap!

I extended the steak and onions with tomato and peas and so had steak and onions X 2 for dinner and tea. Two small spuds left and enough meat for one meal. Amazing how far you can stretch one slice of rump steak! Economy is the household mint!

Economy in this household is doing without the non essentials, Satellite TV, I Pads/Pods, Tablets/Notepads, multiple mobile accessories and means of transport and anything else we don't really need. We do not go out for meals very often now, or even go out for a drink as we consider that what we have here is better. We both enjoy a smoke, but do not enjoy being treated like lepers when we do go out. Food is one of the things that truly is essential, and we do not scrimp on the quality of what we buy, nor is there ever any waste. Foreign meals, Italian etc. are made "in house" as we both have respect for our internal systems and enjoy the challenge of getting it right, at the end of the day it is possibly less expensive as well.

The last of the rump steak plus two lonely potatoes chipped gave me my dinner. Tea was a sausage and fried egg butty on toast. Fruit as usual and it struck me how good Chaudrey's Cox's are this year. Lovely apples and always a bit of a wrench when we come to the end of them and have to go to the imported ones again.

Sausage and egg butty for dinner. I lit the fuse under another veggie stew (neck end and two chops) and it was ready for tea. Cooking slowly on the stove is the ideal way to make stews.... Lovely cold weather grub!

Boring for some I know but when you are a singleton you have to eat what you cook! So, stew and chips X 2 yesterday and one helping left. (It gets better and better!)

Liver & onions tonight with wedges & baked beans. I have thick end of neck in the slow cooker for tomorrow. Will skim off the fat tomorrow and add the veggies.

For as long as I have known my husband, he has said he hates Risotto, so I have never cooked it. I did scratch my head when he recently ordered Risotto in a pub! He enjoyed it too. I didn't say anything.
Last night I decided to cook a Veg Risotto, and served it piping hot and cooked to perfection with grilled fish. Down the hatch it went, and he said it was lovely.
About two hours after dinner I said "so you really liked the Risotto then?"
He looked at me blankly...said he had no idea what I was on about...that he thought it was a cold vegetable salad he ate with his fish( (!) and that he didn't see any rice in it (!)
Aaaaaargh.
It WAS Risotto...it WAS hot...it DID contain the Arborio Rice...and it WAS delicious.
Cold Salad indeed!

I think I married his brother!! My husband always said he hated all rice dishes so one night when he was out I made a paella just for me. When he came home he asked what there was to eat. He ate the leftovers and then had the audacity to say 'how come you always make yummy things like that when I'm not here?' :dontgetit:
