Local knowledge Gloria. It was North Valley Services on Valley Road at Colne at the traffic lights as you came in from Foulridge. The fins were supposed to help with smoke dispersal.....
Next one?

Drat, I was just about to post an answer saying it was the laundry on Byron St./ Skipton Rd (people call it North Valley Rd but it isn't.) It was demolished some years ago.

Not sure if this is on topic, but it may appeal to a couple of our posters. The mystery is why is Elizabeth Williams in the same grave as Eli Lees (local big wig, and ex Oldham Mayor)? Not thought to be directly related.

Any thoughts - might get me some brownie points on 'Sarah's Graveyard'

Beats me David, sorry. Unless they both died in the same event and the remains couldn't be separated, like in a fire?

When Eli died in 1892 his estate was almost £857,000. That's a wealthy man!

1939 register, Elizabeth or Eliza Williams is living with Marjorie Lees (who was Eli's granddaughter through his son Charles) described as a retired domestic servant.

1911 Census she is a Lady's Maid in the household of Sarah Lees who was Eli's daughter in law and Marjorie's mother.

Reminds me that when a Roman notable died his slave might have been cremated with him.

Can anyone tell me why there is a tin tabernacle in this pic of School Lane Earby in about 1900 and where can you still find part of the church?

Thanks all for the positive response to my odd 'object'. 44 views and counting. I got the 'dragon' I had hoped for, (no offence).

I will forward the information to Sarah. Sounds like a well loved domestic servant, or perhaps more likely, as Judge Judy would say 'housekeeper with benefits'.

The house in Werneth Park was a summer school holiday destination when I was younger. It was a small sort of museum then. I vaguely recall not many visitors, and looking at collections of butterflies and moths in viewing cabinets which had heavy plastic covers to keep the light out.

There was also a fully visible working indoor bee hive with a glass front, and a connecting glass topped runway to the outside.

Nice to get triggers to these almost forgotten memories.

Dont know the specifics, but often Tin Tabernacles preceeded the construction of something more substantial, particulary as new suburbs grew in cities, the old building would be dismantled and advertised for sale. Some were acquired for export, others turned into things like Training Ships for Sea Cadets in the inland areas.

Again, it's local knowledge. We have covered it on the site but if there are no takers I'll knock it on the head later this morning.

The tin tabernacle was there because Earby didn't have a church at that time and it was a long walk to Thornton or Kelbrook for the fast increasing population. I believe it ended up in Skipton but Fay Oldland mentions a part of it being in Foulridge.

Well done Wendy, spot on. And yes, part of it still exists in Skipton as a community centre on the side of the main road just past the old Ribble Garage. I didn't know about Foulridge..... (See Horace Thornton's comments in the LTP about the new church having a piece of pipe as a bell. He used to ring it but fell out with the vicar over his marriage.)
Next for shaving?
