I only mentioned Hargreaves Street as it was used as one of the locations in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, I had no idea really
Same as me with High St. The name is probably physical rather than quality. A real Dickensian area. Long before my time in Colne. I've never seen some of the pictures Wendy is showing.. Keep them coming.

So, is it High Street?

Wendy has got it in her first post - it's Lister Street, Colne, June 1932 and the rest of the caption to the photo tells us that `washing hanging across the street was often an indication of the existence of back-to-back housing'.

Where did you find the photo Tiz?

It's in a book titled `Lancashire in the 20s and 30s from Old Photographs', by Christopher Makepeace, 1977, published by B.T. Batsford, London. The preface says `many of these photos come from collections in Lancashire's public libraries'. I've scanned through the list of library credits and the one I've used is listed as Colne. Was I right that Lister Street no longer exists?

You are right, a huge area of very old housing demolished between Windy Bank and St Bartholomew's. There are photos of the demolition which I could post.....should I start a Colne Photo's topic?

Sounds like a plan, I do like old photos. I really must make a start on the history of my house at some time too, it's one of those things that just keeps slipping down the queue of things I want to do.

If you click 'quote' it gives you the option to respond to a post. Is this what happened Cathy?

I've not been posting any of my Colne images thinking they'd be a bit off topic. Maybe I'll have an excuse to do so now

The solution seems to be to create a new topic that it can't be 'off'

Must be Kev.
And in not realising what I had done, I thought “Oh No that can’t be allowed!” I thought my reply had actually gone into Wendy’s reply.
Then I tried to delete my words, but too late. Oops.
Anyway it was near midnight and I was ready for bed, so that’s my excuse.
I don’t really use the quote thingy.

Don't let it bother you Cathy.....

How about this one? It's a Where, What, When object - where is it, what's happening and when was it taken? (It isn't Colne!)

The lass being handed the flag(?) seems to be wearing clogs.

It isn't a flag but you may well be right about the clogs!

Is it a holiday competition at the seaside? The bench in the background looks seasideish.....

Could it be to do with Kippers?
Are those women wearing Viking related headwear?

I get the impression its something to do with 'Rule Britannia' after WW1. Anything to do with the Britannia Mill ?

Spot on, Cathy, well done, the lady is presenting the man with kippers! (But no Vikings involved!). And Stanley is right about the seaside, but it isn't a holiday competition and, no Plaques, it's not connected with Britannia Mill. Keep kippers and seaside in your mind - where might it be?

Whitby or Arbroath for Kippers I reckon.
