Sir Bernard Ingham former press secretary to Margaret Thatcher and of Hebden Bridge, has died aged ninety.
I have his autobiogaphy "Kill the Messenger" somewhere, and will take another look - if I can find it.

I like this quote -

'Many journalists have fallen for the conspiracy theory of government.
I do assure you that they would produce more accurate work if they adhered to the cock-up theory.'"

Baronness Betty Boothroyd has died aged 93.

I was fond of her, and she lived nearby in Thriplow. She gave my young lad her autograph on her shopping receipt when he worked on a till in Tesco. I have a more recent anecdote but that had better remain embargoed for a while.

Yes - that's sad news.
I've just searched the site and had many matters brought to mind. He had strong opinions on many subjects.
I wonder why he stopped posting so abruptly. I have a vague memory that he published a book of Barlick WW1 military people, but I can't find any reference. I think he was very fond of his cats, and the occasional tot of rum.

The book was called Barnoldswick a Small Town's Contribution to Conflict.
I met Peter when he came to open the Earby History Society's WW1 event.

Sorry to hear of Peters passing, the book was inspired by our research into the missing names on our war memorial. Peter found all of the missing ones from WWI while I researched the ones from WWII. He was also instrumental in arranging the rededication of the additions to our memorial and the events that involved including the freedom of the town to the Yorkshire Regiment who attended and paraded on the day.

RIP Peter.

I worked with Peter at Lower Park Marina building canal boats. Here he is in 1998 with Red Admiral which we built for Ian and Margaret Evans. And yes, he had strong opinions about many things.

See THIS BBC obituary.
Silicon Valley pioneer and philanthropist Gordon Moore has died aged 94 in Hawaii. Mr Moore started working on semiconductors in the 1950s and co-founded the Intel Corporation. He famously predicted that computer processing powers would double every year - later revised to every two - an insight known as Moore's Law. That "law" became the bedrock for the computer processor industry and influenced the PC revolution.

It was the funeral of Baroness Betty Boothroyd yesterday, and for an unknown reason, today I had a strong urge to go to the church where it was held. I was a bit intrigued that this strong Yorkshire woman had chosen to be buried here in South Cambridgeshire. Also the fact that it was on a Wednesday, and the Prime Minister had to miss PMQ's as a result . I wonder if that was planned?

It was the annual Daffodil weekend in the village of Thriplow last weekend , so I was still able to see the flowers without any crowds. I boldly drove up a narrow road, right up to the church assuming a car park but there wasn't one. No call for one in the 13th century I suppose. I had a quick scoot around but found no evidence of a recent grave.

Fired off a few pictures then a lady (churchwarden?) arrived to lock up the church, and told me that there had been a family service and cremation this morning, and that her ashes would be buried in the graveyard in due course.

I'm no photographer - but if you're curious I've attached a couple. . . .

No idea - but she had been there for 30years - and could have done a lot worse in my opinion.

I saw her in Tesco quite a few times at close quarters, and a glance at her trolley showed she was not a stranger to the occasional bottle or two of wine.

I now note with interest that

"Tryppa is believed to have been a Bronze Age chieftain who may be buried in the tumulus just south east of the church.[4][5]"

Perhaps time to subsribe to Findmypast again. . . . :laugh5:

The age of St George's church has surprised me. I'm very ignorant about local history. There are many such churches in the area. From the damp smell inside - I'd say the DPC needs some attention. I always wonder what share of local wealth went into building these enormous churches in such small villages.

The unusual name of the current vicar caught my eye. Angela Melaniphy.

Reverend Angela has been a hospital chaplain, worked in training both lay people and clergy, in the healing ministry and pastoral counselling, been the Bishop of Stepney’s advisor in the paranormal and served as a school governor in three schools.

Sounds like a bit of a blagger to me. . . .If they ever need a stand in for Dibley she'd be ideal.

What a great find. . .

I never saw it before. perhaps it's a consequence of the demise of local newspapers?
What a good website. Love the wheelbarrows display team.

I'm warming to " the fabled Bronze Age chieftain, Tryppa, after whom the village is named" :laugh5:

Might have been right about the vicar? Dawn French meets Susan Boyle?
