That's right Kev. They had to prove the concept that 747 pilots could see where they were going when taxiing.

Not sure if the top has slats in or it's just a paint job. Anyway, it look like a combination tea and sugar tin for a lunch box or bait tin if you prefer.

Ah, I thought they were slits in the lid but now you come to mention it that could be paint blocking out the sugar and tea labels.

Yes I blocked out the 'tea and sugar on the lid! Ian is right, two compartment tin, one end for sugar and the other for tea.

All right it's a drill. But why the flutes on the shank?

I think it’s for running coolant through.

I'll come clean Gloria. That's a possibility and I can't rule it out because I don't know. I've been trying for years to find out why the shank is fluted and failed miserably so as far as I am concerned you have it because at least you tried!

It better directs the coolant.

To give cutting edges on the tip, would be awkward with a solid bar.

Now I've looked again I don't think that is the shank because it's tapered,I think it's been made for a specific deep hole, the drill is also slightly thicker in the middle, the shank looks like it's just the small square bit at the end,,,my theory🤷😏

No Tom it's a normal 3 Morse taper shank drill but the difference is that the flutes have been carried up the shank.
I thought at one time it might have been for using the shank as a reamer to clean up the Morse taper on the spindle but that wouldn't work because the shank is left relatively soft and wouldn't cut.
