"So that's my day, a pretty packed one.
As usual Sue!

Today I have spent just over an hour on fixing the lids to the cylinder block. I'm half way there but after just over an hour my shoulder stopped progress.....

Bob is at the dentist this morning too, and model engineers this afternoon. I think we are pack to normal. Talking of dentist, the tooth I broke in July was due to be fixed next week. Guess which day, Monday. No doubt it will be cancelled and another long way off appointment made

Another open and shut case. They should of course remain open. This isn't a case of people not wanting to show up because they want to watch a bit of black entertainment but could be classed as part of the Hippocratic oath to take care of peoples health.

Waiting for the grass to dry, should be OK up Letcliffe by this afternoon. Then it's mainly repacking the tent. Sods law says that the new pegs I have ordered are being delivered today between 3 and 5pm! I have told them to drop in my "safe place" if we are out. :extrawink:

Ian. I think that couriers and delivery companies are getting to be a lot more comfortable with safe places.
I cheated yesterday and spent a few minutes in the shed so I expect to finish the studding of the cylinder block this morning. Once again a sunny forecast for the walk and sit. After that the rest of the day will fall into place. I shall of course be avoiding the 'news' as much as is possible.

Morning

I have had a text, my appointment is cancelled. The dental practice is part of a large group and head office has decreed it will close out of respect....I shall go there this morning to try and negotiate another appointment in under two months! Luckily there is no pain, its just difficult trying to keep the hole free of debris.

Yesterday was a busy day, and today my body knows it has been using muscles it hasn’t used for a few weeks. However that is me finished now for this week as I opted out of Wednesday evenings because of the timing, and Thursday and Friday clash with art during ‘term times’ . As I said this morning I will pop to the dentist to rearrange...it will be quicker than trying to phone. This afternoon our window fitter is coming to replace the window that broke, just before we went to France.

That's it, no other plans for the day. I am doing a bit of sewing and will potter on with that. I will not be going back to Maxine for a few weeks, her 96 year old Dad died in August, and she caught covid whilst visiting him in hospital. Thus the funeral has been delayed until she and Ian recovered. Then there is her Dad’s property to deal with and empty. He lived in Cleveleys so she is staying with her sister, over there at the moment.

I am not sure of the forecast for the day, but have a good day all

Commiserations Sue on the episode with the dentist. Respect is all well and good but when it interferes with medical treatment it becomes ridiculous. Where do you draw the line? Shut down operating theatres? it's ridiculous and thank god you aren't in pain.....

Image

More quiet progress. The lids tightened down and the studs cut back to length then the studs for attaching the Cylinder block to the standards fitted, cut back to length and the screws cleaned up fitted with nuts and put in the stock. Next I attended to the Yokes, checked all the nuts and put them in place. Then all the nuts for the standards tightened down and the nuts replaced on the yokes. Not ready for fitting the cylinder block yet but getting very close!
A satisfying hour and a half......

The Pendle Medical Partnership, which includes Earby Surgery, have just announced that they will be closed on Monday.

Here we are living in a world of satellites, internet and mobile phones and it would be quicker to make a visit than use all this high tech to make an appointment. Mrs P has tried over the last few days to book covid vaccinations at the Health centre. Invariably its ' you are in position seven' ie: a half hour wait. Not urgent so try again later and so on Ad Infinitum. Now we are being offered to ring a call centre (probably Newcastle) to make an appointment in Colne. Something to be said for Tom-Toms and smoke signals.

So I phoned on the off chance someone would answer and they did. I was offered December 2nd as first available appointment and all todays urgent appointments had gone . I calmly but firmly explained I had already waited over two months and that surely those whose appointments were cancelled on Monday due to extremely unusual circumstances and no fault of their own should have priority for replacement appointments. I had to push my side two or three times until eventually I was offered 2.45pm with my dentist today .

I really don’t get this. Yes show respect but public services, especially health, should remain open . The employees should be offered a day off some other time as an alternative. I think businesses are frightened of being named as those that did not show respect.

I will reiterate what I posted in another thread. Within the protocol for the death of a Monarch there is no official requirement for anyone to change their daily routine or for businesses or services to close. Obviously there will be disruption in the geographical areas that the funeral arrangement are held and security and traffic management issues to be handled etc. All marks of "respect" are solely at the discretion of each individual.

After numerous button pushing it now transpires that ALL covid booking is done through '119' call centre. You cannot book directly at Colne.
Besides the normal identity details .. Name, House post code, etc. You need at hand...
Your NHS number. House phone number. Mobile phone number'
If you are doing a multiple booking this info is required for each individual.
Each booking will get its own booking code which you take to the centre which you have booked at the correct time slot.

No problem with the system providing you've done the preparation details.

Main thing is to have your NHS number to hand..... I booked for Wed 21st....
News this morning that further to the discussion about Sue's dentist, the NHS has announced the cancellation of some operations, a circumstance they blame on the fact a Bank Holiday has been created.....

Hmmm, I used to work in the NHS in the path labs. We didn’t close for a Saturday or a Bank Holiday, we had a rota, every other Saturday, every other Bank Holiday and in my day no time off in lieu of having worked, it was just part of my contract

I bet they won’t all be watching the funeral either. My local pub is opening at 10.30 am on Monday, so people can watch and remember together. There will be free pots of tea and marmalade sandwiches . A gimmick perhaps, perhaps not but not money making. Unlike M&S who are closing everywhere except round Windsor ...so they can sell refreshments to the crowds.Hmm that is moneymaking. If I was going to queue for hours I would take sandwiches and a flask or bottles of water.

The bookies has hit the happy medium, take the posters out of the window and open as usual... They are definitely hoping for money-making!
I shall be in the shed working towards my pump. I tried the shaft yesterday and the principle of Scotch Yokes works but the shaft is a bit tight. I think I'll rectify that this morning. My usual fault of making things too close fitting. It looks as if it could be dry but cold for midday walk.....

Morning

Well yesterday morning we managed a circuit walk to the nearer post office about 3.6 miles. It was cool and a bit misty but It all cleared at lunchtime so when I had my dentist appointment I parked at the other side of town where parking is easier and walked up the hill and back, another 1.8 miles. I was tired out last night! However it is good for the old body to get back to normal even if it aches like fury. The dentist trip was very successful and quick. After all the wait it didn’t take more than a few minutes to fill and cover the offending broken tooth. I was back home just after 3.30 pm and was able to spend a little time sewing and finishing a top for the autumn/winter.

This morning is art at Haslingden so its up and out by 9.10 a.m. When I come back and after lunch I will be able to continue with a bit of garden clearing as today the bin men come. Its all looking a lot better now. Its gone too cool I think to get any more runner beans, but we have cooking apples to pick and the rest of the beetroot. I think it is going to be a nice day today but rather cool hovering around 14 degrees. Its 33 today at chez nous in France. It will however be a good afternoon to garden.

Have a good day all

33C is a distant memory now Sue, there's definitely a bit of a nip in the air! Glad you have got your tooth sorted....

Image

I've had an hour and a half in the shed doing fiddly things! I wanted to free the shaft, it was too tight, so I stripped the motion out and milled some more clearance into the standards. That cured the tightness but it remained to be seen whether it would still be free when all the rods were fitted in their glands and the assembly back together again. I'm pleased to say its a snug fit but free and so tomorrow I can go about tidying the studs and fasteners up before going forward to deal with the Scotch Yoke drives to the steam valves and the feed pump.

I shall have an hour in the shed before early doors shopping at 07:00. I suspect it will be on small matters like improving the action of the motion rather than starting any fresh initiatives.
Nothing in the forecast to limit my later walk and sit as long as I wrap up well because we are in for a cool day with a cold wind not helping.

Morning

A cold bright day, just 7 degrees out there and a maximum of 13 forecast today. Autumn seems to be coming on quickly. More gardening done yesterday and I can now see the late summer flowers that we have. The sweet corn was a miserable failure and has now been removed but the beetroot continues to please as do the green beans I picked and prepared last Sunday. I think its too cold for many more so the plants will come out sometime this week. I have potatoes buried in various places but there is no rush to dig them up . I ache badly, I put it down to the gardening rather than the pilates.

I have had a text to make a covid vaccination appointment, surprisingly Bob has not. I booked online and will go to the pharmacist in Bury we went to last October. There do not appear to be any vaccination centres in Rochdale, how ridiculous! If Bob does not hear in a week he can go to a walk in centre in Bury, again there are none in Rochdale.

Yesterday was an enjoyable first art session of the winter, today is another at the u3a in Todmorden, followed by our weekly meal with Wendy and Keith. The Shepherds Rest is under new management as of this week. It will be interesting to see how the menu is eventually affected.

Enjoy your day all, cool but sunny.

A place the size of Rochdale without a single location for the booster? That's ridiculous Sue.
Mind you, I was expecting Well in Barnoldswick to be doing the booster jab, they are where we got the last one, but no such luck, I have to go to Colne Health Centre next Wednesday,
No shed report this morning, I chickened out and will be cooking veggies later this morning instead.
You're right about the temperature... we got very close to a grass frost this morning but so far the heating hasn't kicked in. It could well be tomorrow. :biggrin2:

I got my booster invite yesterday too but the nearest available was a pharmacy in Nelson so I didn't bother to book. No mention of Colne!

Colne Health Centre Wendy......
I have just finished veggie cooking and all the pans clean and put away.... Ready for the meat now but that's for tomorrow. I'm expecting Stuart to deliver my mutton this evening for the freezer as well.

Wendy and Keith are both booked in for a booster at Rochdale infirmary. It certainly doesn't come up on the list online and its only a mile from us here! Bobs has come through, he has booked at the same pharmacist as me but on Wednesday. I wonder if they will do it at the same time as me on Tuesday. Its 6 miles away but was very efficient for our booster last year.

Our heating kicked in this morning at 7.00am

My heating hasn't kicked in yet.... But I shall be surprised if it doesn't fire up during the night, we are going to be in the lower single figures....
Just finished the veggies. Now for tea and a rest!
