I reckon it's an LED light cluster. Ian has it. Out of a Poundland type torch. The batteries cost nearly as much as the torch. The down side is that they tend to fall apart too easily. Solder wires onto the terminals and fasten it to a stick and you've got yourself a handy long distance lamp. I use them when welding to give a bit more back light.

Following Steeplejerks suggestion , something I would never had thought of. When I stripped my old Jaguars cam shafts off the valve clearances were set by shims inside the valve caps. this looks like a nice storage system to keep all the parts in their respective places. So I go along with Steeplejerk.

That's exactly right and yes, if they had been about when I was reconditioning engines I would have used one.
