It's widely recognised that attention span has declined over recent generations, but especially since the introduction of smartphones, then TikTok etc. In parallel, many makers of TV programmes have adopted the same approach of stitching together a myriad of short shots because they feel they have to keep up with the online videos. I don't watch much TV so I'm in a better position to notice the shift - it won't have been so obvious to those (most people) who watch a lot of TV.

Lack of attention span in young children is more common now, but another problem has surfaced. I think the news was largely missed because of the Xmas holiday and festivities. Teachers are now reporting that many new entrants into primary school do not respond to their names. It's already evident that in recent years some young children cannot say their own names. But now we also find they are not responding when teachers call them by name. I've seen this reported in The Times on the weekend but haven't found anything useful about it on google.

Standards must be maintained. Have no regrets at aiming to get things right.

Writing exposes all - as Roger Bacon said - "writing maketh the precise man". It's not easy to write well, and get the precise meaning across whilst being harmonious, and making the experience pleasurable.

I'd say you don't do a bad job - for which we are thankful. :good:

PS I'm assuming that this is a typo. . .

with a bit of luck we'll loose the frost. I see nothing to tempt me out of the door yet!

Tripps, the quote in your post above is attributed to me but the text was from Stanley's previous post. Gremlins! Or could it be the Russians or Chinese trying to disrupt our important messages? :extrawink:

Well, at least two people are talking about it.....
But my question stands, how many people have the attention span to read beyond a caption on a screen? Have we lost something vital?

That's just a cover story. The real importance of the date is that it's my birthday.

I'm not in the mood - so I've just cancelled the "Dinner for Two" which had become the routine for the last couple of years. So - "Different procedure for this year". I've given the butler the day off.

Tesco sent me a bank card yesterday which runs for another five years. Got to admire their optimism.

The very best for your birthday David! I hope you survive whatever is coming..... I can't be very optimistic and, being a realist, i don't think you will be. Keep your head down and do whatever it was that got you through 2024!

What attracted my attention of course was the intervention of my guardian angel Lynne! My dad always said that there was a providence that looks after drunken men and idiots.... It was working well yesterday!

Later.... THIS popped up and attracted my attention. Why is there to be a BBC programme on the subject at a time when abuse of children is in the news?

Drive up to Barlick Aldi at lunchtime today, got all the shopping and the engine management light came up on the car again. £600 worth of replacement sensors and the issue is still there.
It's in a different garage now who have an extensive range of diagnostic kit. Bloody cars...

Commiserations Kev. Is it a VW? Unless it's a new fault I'd be angry at that.

My big lad just had an auto gearbox fail on his just out of warranty VW. He wasn't pleased and raised a bit of a fuss. They have contributed about three quarters of the cost of the repair.

I'd go for Japanese every time.
Fifteen years with Toyota and Nissan have been almost trouble free.

It's a Ford Kuga tdci. It's the same fault code that keeps coming back (P244D for anyone who's interested) each time indicating a different sensor.
I had a VW Golf a few years ago, got 235,000 trouble free miles out of it. It was the 'old' PD engine in it before too many sensors were added to diesel engines.

I am seriously looking at trading it in for something else. What's annoying is all the reviews had it down as reliable. Just my luck to get the 'Friday afternoon' model :biggrin2:

I'm so sorry to hear that the Gremlin is still there Kev. My remarks about a car with no computers selling well still stand.
I note what David said about Japanese cars. Can I remind you about my son in law's Toyota that conked out after running through a puddle and nobody, not even Toyota could fix it. They replaced the whole of the drive train but that didn't cure it. They gave him a Yaris and he drove that for almost a year until they gave up and took his car back. They offered him another Toyota dirt cheap so he took that and it was OK.

My cousin had a Nissan Qashqai for ages then when they made that model bigger she swapped it for a Juke a few years ago. Now it's suddenly `gone rogue'. Warning lights coming on, side lights stuck in `on' mode, batteries going flat, car failing to start etc. The local Nissan garage haven't been able to solve it. She asked them to knock out a slight dent in the bodywork for her while it was in the garage. Turns out they can't do it themselves and they had to send it to the Yeovil garage to be done. When their man drove it back red warning lights came on so it had to go back into A&E!
