Sorry but no..... nothing to do with fibre optics, a far older trade or craft.

Is it for cleanly cutting fine plastic rod or tubing by simply pressing the sharp edge on it?

You are all circling round it. What you are after is what is cut. It's a very old trade and that was always referred to as cleaving....

That may well be so Kev but before glass fibre cables existed, this was a knife for cleaving diamonds. I didn't know about the fibre and was only following the images for 'tools used for cleaving diamonds' I found on the web.

There may be similar tools for 'cleaving diamonds' but it's not my area of expertise so couldn't comment to the contrary.
The image you used is from this website https://technodiamant.com/diamond-cleav ... er-optics/ so it is actually for cleaving fibre optic cables.

Allow me to throw some light on this discussion. Diamond is the hardest mineral. To cut it, saws or knives tipped with diamond are used. Now, lasers are sometimes used too. So a diamond saw or diamond knife is used to cut diamonds but is also made of diamond. Obviously the knives can be used to cut other materials too.

Talking of saws, if you go on holiday to Italy and take your hamster and need to clean its cage, you'll want some sawdust. Check what you're buying - in the marble-producing region the word sawdust refers to the dust from sawing marble blocks in the quarries!

Looks very much like a Camping Gaz or Primus stove burner. Although I think they would have a flange around the edge.
