The weir on Forty Steps which used to serve the waterwheel at Ouzledale Mill. The large lodge behind it on Gillians Beck has silted up over the years.

Two wonderful sights walking up Forty Steps. The weir was one, the other the shed in which a giant shoes was stored. It had been used in a procession/gal in the early 50's as the home of the old woman who lived in a shoe. I was stored there for years. Nolic

Springs Dam on Esp Lane. An essential part of the regulation of the flow in Calf Hall Beck which supplied Butts Mill and Calf Hall Shed.

As well as the water taken from the weir on Stocks Beck, the Crow Nest Mill lodge is also fed by a culvert which brings water from Crow Nest Syke.

After Crow Nest Syke goes into the culvert on the industrial estate behind KB Tyres, it splits into two - with the culvert feeding the lodge heading towards what's now Vicarage Motors before crossing Skipton Road and going under the mill in a stone culvert.

The main channel of Crow Nest Syke goes under what is now the Spar garage, across Skipton Road and down Crow Nest to Stocks Beck. (When I were a lad, before the land where the garage is now was built up, the open water course was good for tiddlers and frog spawn.)

The mill lodge branch of the culvert was investigated when we were looking to improve the flow of the syke to prevent flooding of houses on Edward Street. The culvert is badly silted, with some collapses along it. As part of the possible development of the mill, it may be that some of the culvert is opened up. I'd hope that it's be possible to get it running properly again along its full length.

A scheme to increase the size of the main channel was carried out before the new garage was built, paid for by an assortment of developers, Pendle and the county council. A new trash screen has been installed and the size of the culvert up to Skipton Road has been increased.

Back at Stocks Beck (in the forefront of Stanley's picture), the weir for the Crow Nest Mill lodge used to be a barrier to spawning fish. Last autumn, the bed of the beck was built up below the weir to present fish with a more gentle incline for them to get up (it's like a short length of rapids). Together with other work, it's hoped that the fish pass will allow sea trout up into Valley Gardens to spawn.

1982. The access point to the Bowker Drain in Eastwood Bottoms from which Wellhouse Mill drew the water that kept the mill going. Long since forgotten and now buried but a very important little hole with a fascinating story behind it.

Talking of forgotten corners Stanley, have they demolished that building at the end of your street yet? Are you following the action, and what is intended to replace it?

The site is cleared now David and as far as I know it's going to be a similar build to the one that replaced the old Ambulance station katie corner from it. I'll do a pic......
