Not me Tiz, I couldn't care less about miss America regardless of her scientific efforts. It has no bearing on the more important issues we face.

I hesitated before starting this as a new thread, and wondered if it would survive. Being now on page 8, It seems to have done so - just about. A niche thread in a niche site.

To be fair many of the topics on here are dominated by the Guru, and none the worse for that. (OBN)

As an observation, out of over 2,000 topics that we have on the site. We only revisit about twenty of them day in day out. Some members only visit two or three threads on a regular basis. At the moment there are five members on the site plus one hidden user, one Bot roaming and 60 guests. It would be interesting to see what they are looking at but they all access through the same anonymous user account.

I look at this topic most mornings but I also listen to the news on Radio 4 and visit the BBC news website (as I suspect most of the regular visitors to One Guy do) so unless its local to a particular member and not national news I don't follow the links.

You are in good company Wendy! I do the same.
Tiz does as well and that's why there is the impression we are talking to each other. I saw that news clip as well Tiz and thought how times have changed since the days of the swimwear parade and accusations of illegal padding!

Sorry if it offended you, Ian. I'm no supporter of beauty contests but I posted the link because it showed a woman winning a contest with science instead of her body, and the experiment was an impressive visual display that was fun as well as educational.

Wendy, congratulations! You've managed to get two people who I suspect are at opposite poles of the political divide to agree on something! :laugh5:

It doesn't offend me Tiz it's just that it's irrelevant compared to the more important stuff there is to report.

Prince Andrew Albert Christian Edward Mountbatten-Windsor. (Randy Andy) in the dog house summoned to Clarence House for his Christmas bollocking has resulted in the Palace fighting back with pictures of the Queen, William & Kate, and at a push Prince Charles? and anybody who can add a degree of normality to this dysfunctional family. Mountbatten himself has been locked away in hospital so as not to rock the boat. Expect wall to wall charm offensive until this little hiccup is papered over.

Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark 10 June 1921 (age 98). Mon Repos, Corfu, Kingdom of Greece
I note this curiously suburban name for his birth place.
Louis Mountbatten. Now there's a name to ponder on. If you study the history you might conclude that it leaves something to be desired....
(Of course anything said by this inveterate Republican can be ignored as envy.)

I've been listening to an account of the resurgence of ISIS in Iraq. See THIS BBC report which details the dangers that are arising, a very disturbing picture from a reliable source.
I am reminded of a statement issued by a group of historians arguing against the Incursion into Iraq questioning the thinking behind the policies, particularly the statements that Al Qaeda was active there. They said this was untrue but that if the country was destabilised it would be an open door for dissidents to move in. Ridiculed at the time in the frenzy of 'evidence' about WMD and insurgency, what they said has proved to be spot on. The present version of ISIS is described as 'Al Qaeda on steroids'.

News this morning that after tanking in its first reviews, the film version of 'Cats' has been 'withdrawn for re-editing'. I think that's code for 'we want to see if we can save it'!

We could do with that in Colne. :good:

Thanks, but we can't open BBC links in China.

There is no doubt that technology is everywhere here, so much so that I think we'll soon be a cashless society. I'm still a dinosaur and haven't cottoned on to 'pay-by-phone' but even little old ladies selling a few vegetables by the roadside use this method. 5G and 6G? I'm still mastering 2G.

See THIS BBC report about and unusual bank robber in Colorado who gave the money away to passers by wishing them a happy holiday.
A little known fact cropped up in a report of the bush fires in Australia. The NSW Rural Fire Service is the biggest volunteer organisation in the world with 70,000 firefighters. One for the Pub Quiz?

See THIS BBC report. At least 14 people have been killed after a plane with 98 passengers and crew crashed in Kazakhstan, airport officials say. They say the Bek Air aircraft went down shortly after taking off at Almaty airport on Friday morning local time.
There's always something isn't there. But it's in a small country far away....
Later.... see THIS for a Sun report of a leading lawyer battering a fox to death with a baseball bat after he found it entangled in the netting protecting his hens in the garden. Bizarrely he was wearing his wife's white kimono and made the mistake of posting on social media:- "Already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How's your Boxing Day going?"
He is now engulfed in a Twitter storm and has been reported to the RSPCA!

The annual puzzle which is the New Year Honours List has appeared.

Will she be Baroness Dame Floella or Dame Baroness Floella? What honour will she get next?
