This is the 'Popular Palace' - it needs a bit of imagination applying. Both my parents 'came from' (really really came from) within a quarter of a mile. The boss was Mr Turner who kept order during the quiet periods, and wore a straw 'cady' . I hated it when the hoi polloi got restless since I needed to hear the plot. I hated the bits where the floor slowly slid into the wall.

Ah, the top button cape trick! I'd forgotten that David. Arms out sideways if you were a 'plane and straight forward if you were a space ship......

A first for me, I received an email from the courier Evri to say that my parcel from Silentnight has been 'damaged beyond repair in transit so I have informed Silent night Shop
How do you damage two duvets 'beyond repair?

I saw the cute photo of the queue of robots waiting to cross a pedestrian crossing near Cambridge recently, then thought little more about it. However I had a visit today from a friend who had an identical experience to the one described in the press. Robot Rescue
Seems they are in much use in certain areas on a trial basis. I am amazed. There are several videos on Youtube on the subject.

After being given a helpful push - the robot said "Thank you very much, and have a nice day"

Reminds me once again of the maxim - 'man has never lived at a level of technology below that which is available.'

My Dreamland heated throw conked out last night. It switches itself off as soon as soon as I switch it on. I now have two faulty ones. I wondered about warranty and find I have had it for 16 months -so there is hope - I looked at the Dreamland reviews and decided to just 'suck it up' and save myself a lot of hassle.

To think I was recommending them on here not so long ago. "cancel my last" as they say over the radio. I've reverted to the 'snuggy' which goes some way to keeping me warm.

I'll survive.

That fault reminded me of a gag I heard yesterday on Youtube - from Mick MIller - probably in the seventies

We too have a Dreamland electric blanket. It works but not in the way I'd expected it to do. At least it heats the bed but it's either too hot or too cold, never in between.

I don't trust heated blankets especially since Susan's set fire to her bed. My Christie sheets are like ice when I get in bed but it only takes a few minutes to warm up and I tell myself it's good for me! I've ordered two new high Tog duvets from Silentnight but the first delivery was reported as damage in transit by Hermes or Evri or whatever they are calling themselves today. I've had the old ones for 20 years so it's probably about time I spent money!

P has a hot water bottle that goes in the microwave, I just get into a cold bed.

I'm with you Kev. I have this masochistic theory that the colder the sheets the more your body reacts to generate heat. Probably not true but I have to justify that few seconds torture from the pure cotton sheets. (The ones that are a cotton/artificial mixture are not as savage.

100% 200 thread Egyptian cotton here (whatever that means )

We just have an Emma mattress which are a lot warmer than ones with a lot of air and springs in them. A lot firmer too and probably one of the best things we ever bought. Brushed cotton sheets and duvet cover and we are sorted.

Wikipedia have just asked me again to donate £2. Seems fair - I do use it quite a lot.

However when I start the process - they soon up the ante and want to send me regular emails, and ask for a regular monthly payment, and helpfully (guilt trip) me that the average donation in UK is £7. End of process. . . .


PS Just had a letter from the Council asking me to consider becoming a foster carer.

I stayed loyal to the local (Barlick) economy - and taking the advice of many on here, went out of my way to shop in the town, and a few years ago, I got a Silentnight mattress.

It's very satisfactory.

PS This is a bit spooky. Never heard of the brand then it comes up twice in one day. I'm watching CBS Reality - Murder by the Sea, and find that the series is sponsored by Emma Beds. I think they're wasting their money though - just a brief flash of the brand at the end of each commercial break. It wouldn't have registered but for this thread.

Kev, 200 count Egyptian yarn will be super combed and be about the best quality cotton you can get. It will be on a par with my Christie's and just as icy!
I got mail from Silentnight to apologise for the courier's failure and to tell me two more duvets have been authorised. It turned out that I have known the lady who is dealing with the matter all my life, I remember her being born to good friends of ours.... That was nice....

Stanley, are the Silentnght Sheets not made at their factory in town?
You could have walked up and collected them.

Not that I know of Cathy and it's too far for me to walk anyway, I am very limited these days. (I'd have to carry them as well!)

There's not a factory 'shop' unfortunately. I believe it's only mattresses made there too.

Oh what a shame. Bummer .

I think you're right - but the current Christmas adverts imply that everyone still does.

I don't like seeing children in 'assembly' sitting on the floor. Not only unhygienic, but b****y uncomfortable.

PS I'm tired of hearing about 'pigs in blankets'. They're everywhere this year. It's only a sausage with a bit of streaky wrapped round it !

I can only talk about myself, I haven't eaten a meal of a plate on a table at home since I started living on my own and that's probably about 30 years ago. I prefer Sistema noodle pots and a spoon to a plate and knife and fork. All part of my effort to cut down the time and effort needed to feed myself properly.
However, I still enjoy eating with others from a table in a 'normal' manner.
(PS. I have a theory that the 'TV dinner' was probably the biggest boost to the dry cleaning industry ever!)

I eat my evening meal while sat on my sofa, but if someone was with me I’d like to think that I would eat at my dining table. Depends what your eating too. I often eat lunch at my dining table, while flicking thru a magazine and watching the birds.
