The Brooklyn Bridge was the first to use multiple strand wire suspension cables and later they found they used inferior steel. The book to read is McCullough 'The Bridge'. At the time I was there the HQ of the BB Preservation Society was in Amsterdam!

I seem to remember reading an account of a bullet fired into the head above one ear, travelling right round and exiting above the opposite ear. It could have been a failed suicide. Scalp skin must be tough stuff!

The story about the shot jack must have triggered me old grey matter. In about 1958 when I was picking up farm milk in kits for West Marton Dairy I had a kit on the outside row with a ragged hole in it when I reached the farm. The bullet was still in the can and was a deformed .303. I don't think anyone was shooting at me, it was tumbling when it arrived and I reckon it was a spent round, someone had been careless with an army rifle. We never reported it, just carried on!

But remember that they are thick-skinned beasties and you need something heavier than an air rifle. When wounded they are very dangerous!

Nice tidy job Bodge. Wonderful what Kevlar can contain! When they demolished Dee Mill they simply stacked sheets of corrugated iron against the base, they worked, to much surface area to be moved quickly enough for the debris to fly out.

They're repeating Fred Dibnah's last series, on TV. Turned the set on last night and found myself watching his last chimney felling, Park Mill at Royton.
