Updates are working for me OK, too.

Thanks Pluggy, I shall ignore it. Kev, perhaps it's because mine is a different version to yours? I shall do as plugs says and just keep trying. Everything is working OK.
Two minutes later: That Plugs has more influence than we suspected. Just tried it and it uploaded OK. SPOOKY!

I've been accused in the past of fixing computers just by walking into the room.....

It's your force field that does it - and the black cape and laser sword!

Reflected on the fact that big hard discs, fast computers and a fast site make reposting practical. We have made a lot of progress over the years....

I recently did some searching on the old site, but found it still impossible to see it all. For example I found a topic I was looking for but was quite unable to see the page content.
PS. - how do I change the time to show British Summer Time rather than UTC? Any offers - I can't find out how.
PPs Hold that - I just found it. Go to 'User cntrol panel' and change it there.

Thanks for pointing that out Tripps - I've got the right time zone set (Western European) but I've now changed the `BST on?' setting to `Yes'. I'd thought that the forum software would change the hour for me, but no - manual adjustment required it seems.

Doc still working on the full archive. Try a search on the current site search box, a lot of the old stuff is surfacing in my reposts.

Help! My daughter has asked me to join Dropbox so we can share pics. I have registered, downloaded the programme and can find it in my personal file but I can't get it to open, it just ignores me. Any suggestions?
(PS. I downloaded the Ubuntu 64bit version)

Do you have the little blue icon on the top 'panel' near the speaker symbol ?
Does it show this if you click on it ?
What happens if you go to 'Launch Dropbox Website' ?
What happens if you go to 'Open Dropbox Folder' ?
It just worked for me on 32 bit. Although I'll be removing it, I have Ubuntu One which does the same thing but they give you more space for free.......

Well done Pluggy, the icon was there all the time but I never thought to look for it on the right hand side of the menu bar! (Senior moments....) It works perfectly.

You lot have much to answer for.

I joined this dropbox last night as a result of reading this thread. I join nearly everything I come across - I have a filofax book full of things I have joined. Anyway it seems appealing, but I wasn't ready for it to go through my entire drive, and seemingly - upload anything it felt fit. I've not fully got my head round it yet, and stand to be corrected, but that's my impression. It seems to be something similar to Facebook and your email address book, but at least they give you the option of saying 'no'. Perhaps I can edit my content later? I know they say it is secure, but I can't help feeling some suspicion at the motivation behind this type of site, especially since it is totally free. Perhaps it's because I am reading Bamford's book 'Body of Secrets' at the moment?
Perhaps I am too cautious and this is my first contact with the start of 'Cloud Computing' , which will be the way to go in the future.
PS - I think you can safely ignore most of the above. Having had another look - I have more control than I thought.

Bloody Hell David! I never even noticed! I know what you mean about Body of Secrets.... I had a mate who worked at Menwith Hill in the 70s and 80s and he was so worried about what he was doing he tried to resign from the NSA but was refused. He eventually got out by faking a response to drug use in his regular Polygraph test by smoking some dope the night before and then denying it. It worked and they let him go....

Don't bundle me in with this Dropbox palava, I got involved because I didn't have experience of it and Stanley was appealing for help. I've un-installed it from my computer......
The 'Cloud' is very handy sometimes, but it does raise issues about what 'they' are doing with your stuff and whether someone has found a hole they can poke around in. Having multiple computers its handy to have stuff you want available on any machine without actually having to move it around.

Pluggy, if anything goes wrong I'll blame my daughters not you. It was they who persuaded me to join to make a project we have on the go easier.

Not sure if what I wrote above yesterday is true or not, but leaving that aside, I have been quite unable to get it to work. I've given up and uninstalled it.
