Yup Kev. Not long since we had it. It's a clamp to be used when castrating a horse or other large animal with a hot iron....

Stanley, I don't really know what you could use the electricity for. Lots of small electric motors or even looms that were away from the grid supply.
Charging mobile phones perhaps. or telegraph wires, basically no idea.

Scrub what I said! Sorry Ken but it was made by Browett and Lindley. It's 1000hp, the biggest they made and this one was for powering the Salford trams.

I’ll give you that. It raises as you open it and drops when released to close, pretty automatic. Beautiful gate in churchyard in Eccleston.

When I hung a field gate I always put a metal shoe on the stile at the clashing post end and set a sloping stone at the foot of the post so that as the gate closed the shoe took the weight off the hinges. :biggrin2:
