Nobody is nibbling so here's the answer. This is a lubricator used on the shafting in the mill. It was filled with oil and mounted upside down in the oil hole on the top of the bearing casting. The metal rod rubbed on the shaft and jiggled allowing oil to flow slowly down into the bearing. When the shaft was still no oil flowed. Simple and very effective.

Right Tom, it's a patent heat exchanger tube. John Thompson's in Glasgow ran a nice little line in corrugated tubes and there were two used in a front garden wall on the outskirts of Dumfries I think it was. The idea was that they had greater surface area than a plain tube and also broke up the flow of the medium round them making them more efficient. (They made corrugated furnace tubes as well....)

Yes, you're right! It's a reed out of a Lancashire loom but there is something special about this one. Can you say what it is?
