Announcement delayed. Comments from education professionals calling for Schools, Colleges and Universities to be closed and moved essentially to remote online learning where possible. They say that would have the same effect as closing down the whole hospitality sector.

60 or over, stay away from everyone except to work in a classroom with 30 children, who have been in 30 different households...

Indeed, the teaching unions have reported that the incidence of the virus is around 1% of all primary children and 2% and rising in the secondary sector. Won't take long for that to spiral especially with the teens. Sally said that as she came back through the park from her walk there was group of about 20 -30 teenagers in one bunch, no social distancing or regard for others in the vicinity.

Today's announcement of the lockdown as it stands at the moment. Lockdown. To be reviewed in one months time but this may not be the end of the restrictions. We could return to tier 3,
The new measures will apply nationally for four weeks up to Wednesday 2 December. At the end of the period, we will look to return to a regional approach, based on the latest data.

See THIS BBC report.
Is this a diktat or is it open to debate? If it had been an cross party matter from the start would we have locked down earlier?

I don’t see much difference between this and what we have been doing since July. I cannot go out for meals, I cannot go to the hairdressers. I can still go walking locally and at least the Dell shouldn’t be crowded. Ironically according to the Covid 19 app Rochdale's numbers have not quite halved over the last 4 days .Everyone I know who works is still working from home, everyone I know over the age of 65 or with a health issue has never stopped keeping away from people. We don’t do cinemas, leisure centres, gymnasiums , bowling alleys
Tattoo parlours, etc . Unfortunately my pilates studio will have to close again and I know she is running on a very tight rope. I have suggested she put her online prices up, she is amazingly cheap for what I do.

Lets just hope the ones who have been ignoring the rules now respond

Don't hold your breath Sue. Let me remind you of one of my favourite aphorisms.
"Never underestimate the capacity of some humans to act in a totally stupid manner".

In our part of the south-west the covid numbers are low and we don't see many people doing the wrong things but we'll still have to do like the rest of England from Thursday.

Be thankful you're not among the Navajo people in the US. We listened to this on Americast and now some of it's in this video on the BBC web site. Imagine what it's like for these indigenous people, the `real' Americans, when they listen to Trump saying he'll make America again but has let many Navajo folk die...
`Covid: Clive Myrie visits the Navajo Nation' LINK

Also on Americast we heard a governor in North Carolina explaining how his ancesors have been staunch Republicans since the US Civil War when his father fought for the Republic. But now he's broken out of the mould, he's given up on tribalism and will vote Democrat instead of voting for the party that he says is now `The Donald Trump Cult'. He can't understand how his party could have let someone like Trump become President.

It doesn't work like that with primary school children.

I've lifted two posts directly from Andrew Stephenson's facebook website. I make no comment other than to say some people have very odd views.

Airedale Hospital NHSFT
We are seeing high demand on the hospital which is in turn meaning that our inpatient beds are at capacity. As a result, and as per our escalation plans, we have taken the decision to postpone any elective surgery that needs an overnight stay. This comes into effect immediately, for the next two weeks.

Andrew please don't take the word of this chief investigate of its true... hospitals are making these numbers up...as we know now that when the investigation over the covid deaths earlier in the year, they found over 8,000 deaths that were registered under covid but died by other means. So they are doing the same again because it's the corrupt scientists and NHS who are benefiting from the virus and don't want it to go away. Most of these are labour supporters too who just want to ruin the country. Stop playing into their hands

Should be tracked down and prosecuted for scaremongering.

I'll go now and get on with wrecking the country.

Nice one Kev!

A few posts ago I wrote `In our part of the south-west the covid numbers are low and we don't see many people doing the wrong things..'. This type of news 2 hours ago is why I qualified my statement with `our part of the south-west'. In Bristol things are different and perhaps it's simply the denser the population the more the rule breaking (and you can interpret `denser' as you wish!).
`Bristol illegal rave attended by 700 people' LINK
`Police say they are continuing to deal with an illegal rave at a warehouse near Bristol. Officers who were called to Yate at around 22:30 GMT on Saturday said up to 700 people were in attendance..'.

If the hospital post is from Stephenson then may I remind them that if there are two beds then demand of three is above capacity. More the point that wards have been closed as occupancy for many procedures has indeed become more efficient. Also a need to have free space for cleaning, patient and staff change overs, but still no real investment apart from Boris' vapourware promises of Jam Tomorrow at the last election.

As experienced recently at Blackburn Royal Hospital each examination and minor interventions was followed by a strict corvid clean down of equipment and examination benches etc: taking that facility room out of operation for ½ a hour along with the staff detailed to do it. Deep cleaning of this nature naturally slows things down. Then there is always cases where things don't go to plan and an overnight stay is called for. Having just enough beds isn't the best option when you're dealing with unknown variables.

It's late. . . .

i was thinking about Nightingale 'Hospitals' which were started then stopped without being used. I think the government copied the Chinese - who built them from scratch, with a two thousand bed hospital completed in about a week. (I exaggerate - but not by much)

Can they really be hospitals' in the full sense of the word or are they just 'sheds with beds? They had no dedicated staff. Did they have kitchens laundries, mortuaries, offices, x-ray department etc etc. . .Could they actually be used as real hospitals. I doubt it.

The only plus point is that there was no campaign to rename them Mary Seacole Hospitals.

One was so named I think. Served better coffee.
The Chinese Hospital was a full blown new permanent facility as I understood it, in an area that was having a growing population anyway. Given the amount of time it took to add one medical unit to Burnley General and a replacement (not really new then) ambluance station - about 4 years plus planning, China shows what you can do if you find space and have a workable plan to get where you want to be in a short time.

David, even if they were fully equipped (which I doubt) there are no staff to run them.
Let's not forget who cut the number of beds and nurses in the name of Austerity.

As I understand it these hospitals were constructed to extremely high medical and isolation standards and fully equipped. They did have morgues, laundries, catering and all the services that go with a hospital, they wouldn't be much use without those. I don't know if they were temporary hospitals or have been retained.
I feel sure the military of various countries must be able to put up small 'field hospitals' in a short time.
Years ago I worked at a company supplying NHS laundries and we often worked in the laundries. One hospital laundry that we were called in to advise and assist was sending full 40-foot container loads of contaminated linen to Ireland to be incinerated because they were overwhelmed and couldn't get the articles clean. I'm happy to say we sorted out their problem and got to a point of no condemned linen.

China, that might explain why, when we asked the staff for some rags to clean up an oil spill we were given perfectly good towels! I still use some of them today!

When I was nursing, there were different laundry bags to put linen in ( ordinary linen as in just changing sheets, or blood stained/bodily fluid stained linen, or chemotherapy linen, or infected linen if a patient had gastro or meningitis etc without fouling linen). When I did my time in the sterilising department, we threw linen over an under lit table to identify any tears, pin holes etc before folding and sterilising for theatre use.
I really enjoyed that job. The women who worked there were wonderful, taught me so much, and it wasn’t just linen. We sterilised all sorts of theatre equipment. We used gas and ultrasound and heat to sterilise things.
Great days. Loved my time there. Lovely memories.
Then we would make up theatre trays ready for use. ( abdominal tray equipment, thoracic tray equipment, orthopaedic tray equipment etc)
