So proud of my eldest. She has just completed her first 10 k lake swim competition and came 5 th in 2 hours 59 minutes, not bad for a 48 year old ! She is swimming the length of Windermere in August, this was to get an entry time. She was always a good swimmer but had a few years break when living in the States for 3 years, then a few years of you g children . Distance was her strength, but never this length. I am so impressed

Impressive but she should think again about Windermere.... reports yesterday of very bad algal bloom and I seem to remember that's not good for swimmers.....
I shall be muck shifting in the shed but no cooking today as I did it all yesterday so no walk. We may be lucky and it might not be raining at midday but the weather has changed.

More muck shifting. I reversed the stock in the chuck as that meant I could grip it by the flanges on either side of the crank pin. This means that the drive is going direct into the st0ck being cut and not through the crank pin. I took 100thou cuts, very heavy for a small lathe like this, 1/5" being taken with every pass of the cutter. It took me 3/4 of an hour to get to the point where I could stop and clean up my chips. There will be finishing cuts tomorrow but these will be light and precise, not brutal roughing cuts like today!

Morning
Its an organised official event Stanley not just a random swim and takes place regularly. There are hundreds of swimmers doing it with appropriate first aid , feeding stations etc she did Coniston last year. There are three lakes to swim in a year, a bit like the three peaks walks but they are very expensive to enter , I think she said £200 so instead of doing the three in a year she is just doing one a year. I am sure the organisers will decide if there are any safety issues that will prevent the swim happening thats is why they pay so much to enter.

I did a fair bit of gardening yesterday and all is now looking pretty tidy, everything is planted including my squash plants and last nights rain will have helped them, though the roses look a bit sad today . In the morning I washed bedding, steam cleaned the hard floors, washed the front and back doormats, and Bob shampooed carpets. Then with washing on the line and all windows and doors open to aid drying of floors it rained, heavy unexpected rain which lasted sometime. Anyway it cleared early afternoon and everything did dry.

This morning I have ironing to do then we are driving to Huddersfield to have lunch with a distant cousin who is over here from New Zealand. She is on a ukulele convention. She came last year too which is the first time we met but we made contact years ago as she provided information and photos on her Maylard ancestors which I put in my book. We have a common 4 times great grandfather in the Rev John Maylard.

That will be our day, have a good one

I think there are about 5-6 people down at the pool who enter every year. Some are doing the 'practice' swims to see how they are holding up. Full gear and support boats. These are serious events and are not for the casual swimmer. The swim time you posted is very good. About 20 mins per K is considered reasonable.

I will end with my usual rant... My white blood cell count is down. The NHS advice is don't do open water, lake or river swimming. There I've said my bit, Be warned.

Agreed

Julia frequently does organised Lake swims and City of Coventryalso do lake training sessions. Its not for the faint hearted, but then Julia is used to pushing herself. At one time she held all the swimming records in the Manchester and District 16 year olds, was ranked 10 th in the country for her backstroke, and at age 14 won a silver medal in the National age group competitions for the 400 m Individual Medley. She just missed the British youth team by one place. She loves her swimming and loves the friends she makes. Many are life long friends. A couple of weeks ago she bumped into someone she used to train with at Rochdale Aquabears. He was in the same lake swim as her.swimming is is in her blood and she is even training to be an official both pool swimming and Lake swimming. A proud Mum indeed I am afraid. You think I am always busy, I look lazy next to Julia

I shall be in the shed working quietly away on my crankshaft, we don't want any accidents after all this honest endeavour has gone into it! I doubt if there will be a walk, not a good forecast but I don't have to go out for anything so that's no big problem.

Creeping up on the final dimensions of the crankshaft and finish, I have it very close after this morning but it's too hot to measure accurately for finished size. I have cleaned my chips up and put them in the bin.

Morning

I woke late having been awake between 4 and 5.45 pm .it was an excellent meal with Catherine from New Zealand yesterday, getting home about 6.00. We chatted like long lost friends yet we have only met once before. It. Was a very nice restaurant in the outskirts of Huddersfield called Erics. It looked nothing from the outside but appearances can be deceptive.

Mrs P and her friends likes a lunch at the Thatch and Thistle (Nelson) and herein lies a story.
Dropped them off around 11 45 AM. will call back at 2.00 pm. Sat in the car park and 15 mins later they appeared.
10 days later £100 parking fine.
Called down today... Explained that I didn't know I had to book in on the inside of the pub on a keyboard device. Result "don't worry we'll cancel the fine.
A good bit of PR but worrying just the same.

They enjoyed the meal and will go again.

Gosh Plaque’s, that’s one expensive lunch out with the girls. Kind of them to let you off, sounds like it might happen often.
(In today’s money £100.00 is $187.22. - Ouch!)
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here. :)

Some of that was on the menu yesterday but it was a Father's Day special. It was also full of Sunday roasts with a difference. We all had lamb which xame with dauphinoise potatoes brocoli, asparagus, pea shoots and other things.

Yes. The whole parking camera business started because the students at the Nelson College were using it as a free car park. The patrons using the pub had nowhere to park. For a while they stopped the cameras but the student parking stared again. The car park is still free to patrons but they have to register the car number on an keyboard INSIDE near the doorway. No problem once you know the routine.
Don't let it stop you visiting the pub the meals are the usual fare and at low cost.

I always thought it incongruous that when that pub was built they decided to have a thatched roof. Is it still thatched?
Today I shall be in the shed making the final adjustments to my crankshaft..... very carefully! A slip up at this stage would be a tragedy. I shall be on red alert. Not sure about a walk, looks like rain later.....

Only one image this morning. I have spent an hour and a quarter finishing the crankshaft, doing the final turning to size and finishing the surfaces. It is now ready to fit to the engine. I can forget it and get on with engine building.

Morning

We have passed it often and wondered what it was like. I am not surprised about the parking issue, its very near the college.

Well it was definitely a day of rain and showers but despite that I got some washing done, and gardening. I have next to no flowers apart from sweet peas left in the garden, the heavy rain has seen to that. At least the soil is now throughly wet. I. Think more rain is due today.

I have no major plans today. Its pilates and yoga this evening. I think I may tidy a couple of drawers and cupboards. Its some time since they were done. Depending on the rain we have a walk. Have a good day all

Like you Sue, I have no big plans.

Image

I have finished my crankshaft and I think this morning, rather than crashing into more machining on the new engine castings, I might simply get my ducks in a row ready for a start later in the week. There is no rush! I see nothing in the forecast to stop me having a walk and a sit later...... I shall take a view when I have finished giving my feet some TLC in preparation for a visit from my chiropodist Robin tomorrow morning.
Later. I've been in the shed and cleaned Mrs Harrison. That's it. I am having a day off! :biggrin2:

You are position....Seven. ie: a minimum of 25 minutes wait.

Colne Health Centre allocate a 'named' doctor. I call mine Dr Griffin after the invisible man. Actually you can request any Doctor but getting your preferred who knows your history is like the National Lottery. It could be you.
