I'll give you a map to look at first, showing where Fox Clough mine was and the railway which brought the coal up into Colne. Zoom in to the top right hand corner.

Looks like the excavation of the cellars of old buildings on a demolition site. Ill guess that it's in Colne?

Yes it's in Colne, and they are in what remains of cellars but is that a flywheel of some sort? Hoping to get answers as we have no idea!

If it's a flywheel it is most likely to be associated with a gas engine like this one in the cellar of the Co-op in Barlick.

It looks as if this one will remain a mystery! As far as I can see there were only rows of old houses on this site before demolition.

Just a question before I leave it Stanley. If the town gas was manufactured and stored down in the valley by Colne Water, would there have been enough pressure to supply the town on top of the hill?

Well done Ian, that's right. Well remembered. I forget where I got it from.
The impression reads:- Craven Monumental Works. Canal Wharf Skipton. James Simpson, builder and contractor.

That's the hinge Ian, you lift the front up to insert the paper. But you are right about the purpose.

Try this. What is it and where?

Both of you have the right location but neither of you have said what it is. It is of course the saluting base where Hitler used to stand and make his speeches. If you would like more information have a look at THIS detailed history.

Very interesting picture, the more you look at it and the more you see. There looks to be a guy crouching down, taking a photo of a white sheet propped up on a line drying, least that’s what it looks like to me. Plus loads of other stuff going on,but I’ve no idea where it is.
