I started the morning by ditching the old cutter in the mill and sharpening a new one to replace it. Then I tested it by milling a surface on a piece of scrap brass. The old cutter is in the recycling, it owes me nothing! Next I replaced the big 3 jaw SC chuck with the smaller and newer 4 jaw SC chuck. That enabled the holding of one half of the brass that forms the bearing for the crank pin. I turned the top of that to size, 1/4" diameter, and then drilled and tapped it 3/16" X 40TPI for the plug that will stop the oil hole off. One last job, I found the 4BA bolts that will hold the two halves of the bearing together as that needs to be done before I can bore the bearing 3/8" to fit the crank pin. Another good morning, no mistakes and tomorrow I'll make the plug for the oil hole before fitting the bolts to the brasses. It's a good day!

Morning

My goodness we have woken up late this morning…7.40 am, so this will be short so we can get off to the market. We had no phone call yesterday so we are still in limbo and don’t know if that is good news or bad news. Its back to waiting.

We have no plans today after the market except I really must get my geraniums in from the greenhouse. The recent cold and damp weather is taking its toll and the leaves are crumpling and going mouldy. Its very damp out there . I will have to shuffle things around to get them in.

Have a good day

I'd expect that if there was any really serious news to convey they would do it. There doesn't seem to be any pressure on them, so it can only be good news..... At least I hope so..... Tell Bob he will be on my mind all day.... :biggrin2:

Had a wander into Colne, had a wander around a couple of shops and came back home again. That's about as exciting as it's been here so far today. Might bob out to The Polished Knob at Todmorden this evening, middle offspring is performing with the rest of the band.

What exactly is the Polished Knob?
I didn't go out even though it was dry but kept warm and waited for my visitors.
I shall be in the shed at 06:00 as usual making my crank pin bearing. Today I shall go for a walk unless the weather forecast speaks with forked tongue and it rains at midday..... :biggrin2:

First job was to measure and mark the brasses and then drill for the bolts which hold the bearing together and are used to fasten it to the foot of the Connecting Rod. In order to make them long enough the back side of the bearing had spot-faces cut for the bolts. Next I made the threaded plug for the oil reservoir and this included David's favourite operation, knurling the head. I made and fitted this small item and then tidied up and put tools away. I am ready now to bore the bearing and start making the con-rod. Another nice morning with good error-free progress, now for a well-deserved breakfast.....

Its a pub, not one I have ever been in

We spent a lot of the day outside yesterday, i was tidying up leaves and bringing in plants from the greenhouse. Bob was doing some much needed house maintenance. This morning I am off to Preston to a carol concert at a local church, where Erin is singing with the school choir. Bob is off to the park as today is the Santa Special and it all has to be set up this morning. I shall be back later to strip the bed and change the bedding before cooking our roast pork tea. Bob has woken with a streaming cold. I had a bit of a one during the week which we suspect I caught from a sniffing women in the tram on Monday.

Have a good day all

I shall be in the shed as usual at 06:00 working on my crank pin bearing and connecting rod.
I doubt if anyone really understands to satisfaction I get from this activity..... I regard myself as fortunate that over the years I built up the understanding and skills to be able to pursue it and also quietly built up what is now my shed. If you tried to replicate it you would fail because so many of the elements that make it up are either unobtainable or astronomically expensive because they are antiques!
I was basking in praise from an old tool room man who was admiring my Harrison Lathe and he reckoned that a modern equivalent of that level of quality would cost a minimum of £10,000. It cost me £1,000. I think the lesson is that we have to get into the habit of nabbing bargains when they float past us on the river of life!
( For instance, I complain about the price of my castings but in forty years I suspect they will look dirt cheap, if they are available at all!)

Decorating at youngest offspring's house over in Harrogate. It's only a bit of emulsion, on the walls of granddaughter's bedroom, so shouldn't take long :good:

Two tasks this morning, finish the crank bearing by Boring it 3/8" for the pin and then start on making the con-rod. Stuarts supply a piece of rectangular bar to make the con-rod out of but due to the fact that my design is slightly different than theirs it isn't big enough to provide a footprint big enough to make the foot that the bearing attaches to so I had to find a piece of scrap and cut a piece to make the rod out of using Mrs McMaster. by the time I had measured, marked and cut that it was knocking off time so my last image is of the original stock from Stuarts, the piece of scrap I shall use and the finished crank pin bearing. Now for breakfast!

That is as I imagined it, about as colourful as my Tod acquaintances who go there….

Bobs cold is a right heavy one with a nasty cough, I have just got the covid testing kits out. Better safe than sorry as we are hosting a lunch do here on Wednesday for the u3a wine group. Despite Bob’s cold the Santa Special at the park was very successful, queues were longer than ever seen, and they took over £1000. It was donations rather than the usual £1 per ride.I did a spot of advertising online and it seems to have worked. The money will be used as usual to pay the overheads, repairs, maintenance and bills. Sometimes they do events for local charities or the Mayors charity .

Today we have the dishwasher fixed or at least hope we do. I don’t fancy washing up after 15 people on Wednesday. Our friend Kath is coming round to cut Bobs hair and I have zoom pilates and yoga. We hope to hear from the cancer team, if we have not heard by lunchtime Bob will phone them.

Have a good day, showers forecast here.

Poor Bob! He is under the cosh isn't he..... (And I know he would hate to hear me saying Poor Bob!)
I hope things work out for both of you today. And I do realise the stress all this puts on you Sue. I'm sure you recognise this but do try to look after yourself. You are Bob's best asset at the moment......
I shall be thinking about both of you....
I've just seen your latest post. Bugger! Question is was the source the 'sniffy young women' on the tram?

I shall be in the shed at 06:00 and will be converting that piece of rusty scrap into a connecting rod. No other social engagements so I shall shoot for a walk at Midday as it looks as though the weather will allow it.....

This morning the task was to convert this piece of rusty scrap into a connecting rod.... I hit the usual problems with scrap, you never know what you are getting. With this sample it was that it is harder than I would have liked. So I had to resort to indexed carbide and that in itself was a problem because the tool I selected had a blunt tip. By the time I had found that out and corrected it it was knocking off time. I have got the shaft to it's major diameter. Tomorrow I have to reduce the shaft to the minor diameter....
Yes, I could have ditched this scrap but I decided to persevere. I like making something useful out of what others have thrown away! Now for breakfast and second sleep.

Morning

Well Bob had a good nights sleep, cheers for NIGHTNURSE. I think he slept solid for over 8 hours as did I. I think we were both tired after a bad night the previous night and what turned out to be a rather hectic day . Bob spend the day doing a few minor repairs in the house ( he prefers to be busy) and some paperwork. I took the takings from the Santa Special to the bank…I drove down, as I wasn’t carrying all that cash all that way. It started to rain whilst I was in town and very quickly became heavy and the clouds came down as a fog.

The dishwasher repair man came . He said it was the plug socket that was perhaps faulty, the machine is ok. To get to the socket it meant emptying the cupboard under the sink. Bob checked the socket it seems ok so we still don’t know what the fault was that kept blowing the fuses in the house when the dish washer was switched on.

I took the opportunity to tidy the cupboard out, throw old bottles and such away . I relined the cupboard and storage boxes….then when I threw away some water in the sink it flooded the floor, the cupboard and the storage boxes. Some how a coupling had moved and the pipes leaked. It has taken 4 beach towels to soak it up, and endless teatowels. The cupboard is soaked the floor boards are soaked. Perhaps tomorrow will be a better day.

When Bob checked the socket it had him crawling on his hands and knees to reach it as it is behind the shelf that I had cleaned, tidied and now had to empty again and dry out. Leaving everything open to dry out and the dishwasher switched off we sat down, now 8.00 pm, when we had two more power cuts on the same circuit again. So it is not the dishwasher. Bob is going to have to check all the sockets on that ring main. On the plus side, its all clean and washed out under the sink with lots of soapy water . We are wondering if it has something to do with the rain. This wiring goes into the conservatory , although the washer in there is working fine, thank goodness. However it used to be the outside wall of the house and we do know that in heavy rain the conservatory leaks badly.

In the afternoon Bob phoned the cancer care team to find that his case had not been discussed on Friday, we don’t know why so we now have to wait till this coming Friday.

Oh yes I forgot Zoom pilates was cancelled midway as water started coming through the studio ceiling on to the new carpets. The workmen on the floor above had an accident….Luckily Taira managed to collect the water in waste bins before cleaning the carpet ready to continue with her next class at 11.00. The 5.15 class zoom class went ahead as normal.

WHAT A DAY. Hope today is better. Have a good one everyone.

Chasing an electrical fault is a nightmare, I had it at the previous house. The RCD kept tripping which took everything out, eventually I identified it as a neutral fault in the under cabinet lights in the kitchen, if it had been a fault on the live side it would have tripped the circuit MCB as well as the RCD. Took me ages to go around and unplug/ disconnect everything one bit at a time.
:biggrin2:
