Always a good thing to do Kev, you'll be going back there again and it's good if they have good memories of your last visit!
I shall be in the shed at 06:00 working on my valve train..... No other social engagements today, I can have an easy day. I shan't be having a midday walk if the weather forecast is correct, it says heavy rain!
So, a quiet day watching the old year fade away.....

The first thing I did, while I had the big 3 jaw on the lathe, was to take the piece of rusty scrap I made the eccentric out of yesterday and clean it up so it was a respectable piece of stock ready for the next time I need it. Then I cleaned Mrs Harrison and put the 4 jaw SC chuck back on. Next I put the eccentric back in the lathe and spent some quality time improving the finish on it. As soon as it was respectable I moved it into the pillar drill and drilled the eccentric hole in two stages. Next I finished that so it fits on the shaft and tomorrow I shall drill and tap for the setscrew that will eventually lock it on the shaft when the timing has been set. Good steady progress and no mistakes.

Bacup market this morning following an early Tesco delivery. We had to change the delivery time from late this afternoon as we have been invited to Keiths 80 th birthday do, a quiet affair with a few friends from 3.00 this afternoon.

I'm having a quiet day as well, I can forget medical matters until January 15th when the nurse will be calling me. (Unless they have another fit and want another test!)

I've had a good two hours second sleep and now I can settle down to doing nothing slowly whilst observing the day through the kitchen window. It is damp cold and gloomy....

We have had a lazy morning, only just showered and dressed. It's coffee time now.

It was a day for being lazy Kev and today looks like another! The glass has fallen for the last 24 hours and hasn't stopped yet.
I shall be in the shed at 06:00 finishing my eccentric and starting on the valve train. The replacement everyday cutter I put in the mill is a big two flute and is doing well but I will be better off with a three flute so I shall be doing something about that when I have finished working on my eccentric......
Later this morning veggie shopping with Susan as a Sherpa.

I started the morning by drilling and tapping for the 3/16"Whitworth set screw that will be used to lock the eccentric on the shaft once the valve is set, and fitting it. Then, as promised, I looked through my collection of end mills and found three 3flute 1" end mills that could be reconditioned to useable condition. I found three and gulleted the centre of each of them. Then I put a new Grinding wheel on the T&C grinder and put a dust mask on because I was going to spend the rest of the morning grinding. By the time I got to knocking off time I had ground a new back rake on all three of them and was ready to finish them by grinding a new cutting edge at 6 degrees. I had done over an hour so that will be the first job tomorrow..... Now for breakfast.

Its a lazy start to the day, didn’t waken till nearly 8.00am. Yesterday we had a very pleasant after with family and close friends at Wendy and Keiths. We didn’t intend staying long as we are both suffering from post covid tiredness , but in the end we stayed nearly 5 hours. It was just a nice informal buffet and lots of chat.

It seems dry and cool out there. If it stays dry we may have a short walk after breakfast. Have a good day all

Today I shall get my chicken prepared and in the oven before I go in the shed to finish sharpening milling cutters. After second sleep I shall brown the chicken, have a breather and then do my first veggie cook of 2024. so By the time I get to the afternoon I shall have had enough honest endeavour for one day!
Later at 05:30. I have put out the last meals from Last week. the chicken is prepped and in the oven with all it's veggies and gravy and I am having a breather before going in the shed. Oh, and I have put the trash out as well. 2024 is under way.....

I started the morning masked up and working on the Clarkson T&C grinder to finish grind the end mills I had worked on yesterday. I now have 5 serviceable end mills. Then I started working on the brass casting that will become the eccentric strap. The rest of the morning was spent in carefully milling the external features of the strap. I want it all nicely finished, square and ready for further refinement. My final blow was to file some of the curved faces that can't be milled. I haven't finished these surfaces but will carry on with them tomorrow. The chicken is in the oven cooking. A good start to the day, now for breakfast.

Another late start. We have just woken up having seen in the New Year with a glass of fizz and watching the fireworks going off over Rochdale and Oldham. Happy new year to you all and lets hope it is a better one.

We managed a good walk yesterday and got back before the rain started. We did a good circular through the local hills, in to the Dell where the waterfalls were magnificent and stopped for a hot drink at Healey Dell tea rooms. Today our friend Kath is possibly coming to cut Bobs hair then we are off to Claires for our tea. I think she is making a curry.

Morning Sue.... I didn't get a walk really, just a trip to the Co-op and my shopping. I have just put the chicken back in the oven to brown and then will have to address the small matter of veggie cooking.
I had been asleep for four hours when the fireworks woke me up . No spectacle, just loud explosions! Each to his own......

Cooking is under way! Four pans on the stove.

That's it! All cooking is done, pans washed up and put away. Pans of veggies in fridge and I have just finished cleaning the hob. That's enough honest endeavour for one day.....

No cooking today thank goodness! I shall have a quiet day, yesterday was verging on too much. I shall be in the shed working on my valve train but after that doing very little and that includes my midday walk, I fear it will be rained orf......

Using the mill, a new Swedish File and emery paper. After measuring and checking I further refined the casting for the eccentric strap and now I am ready to drill the lubricating hole and the two bolt holes for the fastenings that will hold the two halves together after I have split the casting but all that's for tomorrow! Now for breakfast.....

I think we may take the decorations down today. Kath is coming this morning to cut Bob’s hair, she couldn’t make it yesterday, and if the rain is not too heavy we may walk down to the bank this afternoon. Pilates does not restart until tomorrow, otherwise its all back to normal

Morning Sue, that sounds like a nice quiet day. That's what I shall be trying to achieve....

One correction to yesterday's post, I shall not be taking decorations down as none were ever put up!
I shall be in the shed at 06:00 working on my valve train. After second sleep the kids are coming to visit, they are parked locally for the rest of the week. There's an outside chance it may be fine enough for a walk, a rarity of late!

I started the morning by drilling the hole for lubrication using a centre drill to give me a tapered cup. Then I drilled the lugs clearance for 5BA to accept the bolts that will hold the two halves together once I have split the strap before boring. Then I refined the strap so there was room for the nut by filing the lugs back. Next I put witness marks on the strap to make sure it was re-assembled correctly once it is split. Next I concentrated on the 5/32" strip that will form the arm of the eccentric strap. I marked the strap so I cut the pocket for the arm on the right side of the strap and then reduced the 3/16" stock by 1?32". Then I measured and set out and drilled the 5BA clearance holes for the bolts that attach the arm to the strap and the journal I shall make for the end of the valve rod. That got it to an hour so I knocked off with good progress and no mistakes.... That's good, now I deserve some breakfast before second sleep.

We didn’t take the decorations down either or go to the bank. Kath came late morning and left at lunchtime. After lunch Bob went down to the park to help finish tidying up after the Santa Special which is the last visit for a few weeks now. I spent the afternoon typing on my Widdup book. Bob received an appointment for Christies tomorrow at 9.30 so we will have to leave here at 7.30 the latest.

Today I have sewing with Maxine at 2.00 and zoom pilates at 5.30 pm. We will probably walk to the bank this morning.

Best wishes to you both in this stressful time but of course particular thought for Bob. I shall be thinking about him as I get up from second sleep.
