MYSTERY OBJECTS
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
This one may appeal to those Barlickers who have travelled a lot. Ie: its in Burnley.
What is it? where is it? Why is it well known?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
...and I thought (following the theme) it was Burnley nick...
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
David. Correct in thinking it was a Burnley "nick" . I believe it still has its doors on but this may because they stopped having council meetings there. Still two questions to go. Where is it? Why is it well known?
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Is it near Bridge Street, on what was Fleet Street, don't think that is there now???

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Gloria. This Ex-police cell is still standing. Unfortunately you can't Google street view it because its in a pedestrian precinct not too far from the site of the Mere stone.
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Was it used during the Burnley strike in 1818? A Bellman named Brown was engaged by the strike leaders, and he was arrested by the military and handed over to William Chaffer, the PC who imprisoned him in a dungeon on Fleet St.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Gloria. I've read the extract you quoted. I suspect the "dungeon" was actually a cellar. You would be amazed at how many people lived in cellar dwellings in that area of Burnley. No it isn't that one. This cell was opened in 1819 one year later. A very upmarket place, just ground floor accommodation without a dungeon.
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Is it in the backyard of an old pub??

Gloria. Well done. 100 nectar points for tenacity. People walk past this place every day and never realise its there.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
How interesting, it's a lesson in looking around where you are going. I lived near Burnley for many years, and was completely blinkered to it. Thankyou for drawing attention to it.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Moving away from engineering and architecture... can you identify the plant this bee is feeding off?
It was grown in one of the Rainhall Centre beds during this summer as part of the Barlick in Bloom effort.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Is the plant one of the Solanum family? Potato, tomato, deadly nightshade? The bee looks like a Buff-Tailed Bumble Bee.

Haven't a clue! (Pleased I identified the flying thingy as a bee, though...)Tizer wrote:Is the plant one of the Solanum family? Potato, tomato, deadly nightshade?
It's a common vegetable which flowered and set seed. The seed pods are edible.
(Later, after googling, 'Is the plant one of the Solanum family?' No.)

Here's another view of the plant. It's the one at the front of the raised bed.

Random answer generator?
Coming back to the plant, it's a root vegetable commonly used in salads...

Ha! That was my response Stanley. Thought I would wait just incase there was a picture missing, didn't want to embarrass anyone...
So, what are you up to Pluggy??

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Pluggy. You're not thinking of the "Ped-a-toe" plant a relation of the potato. Slightly hallucinogenic plant favoured by councillors as a salad.
