That's the one. Jane lives in a ground floor apartment of a large Victorian house just minutes from the beach, with outside space...there's me talking like a TV presenter.....

" how does someone who has no personal transport manage"
I can answer that David for Barlick. If you have an appointment for Airedale at Keighley, one of the hospitals that serves us. You either spend £100 on taxis or you don't go. The journey by public transport is horrendous. I have friends and relatives who would take me but how long would that be acceptable and is it fair to ask anyway. That was one of the reasons why I declined any further treatment for my cancer. (Which incidentally has not caused any problems.... So far!)
I chose Burnley General and Blackburn, much better transport links. The M6 will take you from Barlick to a bus stop that's a 5 minute walk from Burnley General (I have used this when the visit specifies not to drive), it's currently £2 a journey too. There is also a free shuttle bus between Burnley General and Blackburn (not had to use this yet though).

Yes but unfortunately my medical relationships are with Airedale.
On top of the transport difficulties is my mistrust of my ability to cope with any form of transport beyond a short walk to a place in Barlick. I don't know if I can trust me balance.... It gets very difficult.
This morning I shall be in the shed at 06:00 for an hour with my castings. After that I have no demands on my time and it looks as though we shall have wind and rain for most of the morning. I have to admit that my suspicion is that I will stay in the warm today and do very little beyond read.... I know, I'm a lazy old bugger!

I turned the bed casting over and refined it using first the 5/8" cutter I modified yesterday and then the normal 1" end mill. I finished up with all the necessary bits cleaned up and all square with each other. Tomorrow I shall break the edges and clean up. This has been another good hour producing nice results. Now I am off for my breakfast!

Morning
As I said Stanley Mum and Dad used a voluntary transport service to Manchester Royal, down by the University. They were taken, waited for and brought back. There surely is something locally to you.
We got home from Liverpool about 5.00 having had a good walk round, nice lunch, and I even managed to find a fabric shop and bought some fabric. After unpacking I set to and did all the washing including towels, and I hope to iron this afternoon. This morning I am meeting my friend Gill for a short walk in Healey Dell. She is dog sitting close by so we thought it was a good opportunity to meet up. It is due to be 40 % light showers. . We are due at Claires in Preston at about 5.00 as we are going out for ( yet another ) meal, this time for Bobs birthday which is during the week.
Have a good day all

So Bob's birthday is close to mine.....
I was just debating whether to go for a walk now. I popped me head out the door and it's wet and windy so no, I will stay in the warm.

I shall be in the shed as usual at 06:00 refining my castings. After second sleep I can please myself as I have no social engagements or needs that will drive me to shop. I see we are forecast to have rain at midday so that will put a kibosh on a walk. I could always do some overtime in the shed but that would be against my principles. The slower I build the engine the longer it is before I have to spend another £650 on castings!

Only one image this morning. I spent the first half an hour refining the surface finish of the base and bed but not to the point where they didn't look like castings. Once that was done I drilled the lugs on the castings clearance for the 2BA bolts that hold the bed on to the base and for the holding down screws on to the plinth in the case of the base. Then I drilled and tapped the bed for two of the 2BA bolts and when they were tightened down, marked the bed for the remaining two bolts at the flywheel end. That was where I finished. I will complete that tomorrow. Now for breakfast!

Yes indeed, the 7 th. My brother who died was the 7 th, my Dad the 14 th, my grandpa the 10th, now its just Bob and of course you Stanley on the 14 th. It was a very pleasant meal out, but we were both tired after a busy weekend. In the morning Gill and I had walked 4.5 miles too.
Today I can fit a pilates session in, then make some soup for lunch. Its Bobs first session at Christies today but it is late afternoon, we will probably hit rush hour traffic on the way back.
Have a good day all

I hope not Sue. You never know, you might get lucky. Good luck with it anyway. Please give Bob my best, I'll be thinking about him.

The appointment is 3.15 pm, thats the start of rush ‘hour’ in Manchester and it goes until 6.30 ish. At this stage we have no idea how long the appointment will be but even if it is only 45 minutes, then walk back to the car it puts us on the road at about 4.30 pm and the motorway at 5.00pm, but what is, is. I am more worried about the snow on Thursday, 12 cm forecast here, but at least that day the appointment is even later

I shall be in the shed at 06:00 as usual doing good things to my castings. From 05:00 onwards we are promised heavy rain and 50mph winds so I don't think a walk is likely! You are right Sue, we are in for a bit of winter for the rest of this week. Deep Joy!

I carried on drilling and tapping for the bolts that hold the bed down onto the base. Once they were done I screwed the base down onto the temporary wooden plinth it will live on for a while while I carry on with fitting parts as I complete them. Next I replaced the vise on the bed of the VM and trammed it in to make sure it is parallel. That's where I finished up, quiet progress and I'm ready for breakfast!

Morning
All went well with travel yesterday. It is certainly a very good route, which we had thought about very carefully. The Heywood route is the quickest way out of Rochdale and not too busy, and the anti clockwise route on the M60 is certainly less hectic and faster than the clockwise. I drove there in 55 minutes with absolutely no hold ups, and Bob drove back at 5.00 pm in about the same time. I think that is about the fastest possible from where we are in Rochdale.
We arrived half an hour early but Bob was seen an hour late. However the treatment only lasted about 15 minutes so we then went to the M&S outlet for a coffee before we drove back. Today its an early afternoon appointment so we shall take a couple of sandwiches for our lunch and have them with a coffee there beforehand.it will all just become a natural routine after this week. Otherwise yesterday was uneventful apart from making 3 plus litres of soup and spilling 2 litres of it all over me and the kitchen worktop. Cleaning up and having to get changed was not on our timing schedule
This morning before we go out I shall put a load of washing on, it will be finished when we get back. I will probably miss pilates but may make yoga. The relaxation at the end would be gratefully received.
Have a good day all.

The wind was strong here but not bad and next to no rain. The present forecast here for Thursday is now sleet with snow on higher ground than us

It becomes a routine Sue, and it’s surprising how quickly it’s over with. We made a couple of very good friends through having appointments at a similar time, lovely people, would never have met them if only

Yes , thank you Gloria. My first reaction yesterday was ONE DOWN . Today we will have time for a light lunch before we go. By the end of the week we will know average journey time, average waiting time etc. I am taking my Duolingo french to do and I have even bought a book of short stories in French to read. I quite got into that yesterday. With this weather its not conducive to doing anything outdoors so not losing anything there

I'll second that Sue! Today looks as though it might be a bit better though. I shall be in the shed as usual at 06:00 doing useful things to my castings. I shall be aiming for a walk at midday and the forecast is promising.

I started with the steam chest lid but didn't get any further because it had horrible cold short corners which were hard enough to destroy the cutting edge on my HSS end mill. I was forced to use it for some operations to achieve perfectly square cuts but then had to finish most of it on the grinding wheel. I finished up with a decent result but it's a 16th of an inch thicker than normal. I shall deal with that when I come to the studs that hold the steam chest and lid on to the cylinder.I had to sharpen the cutter on the T&C grinder three times..... Now for breakfast!

Morning
I woke at 7.14, which is my usual time and thought that I needed to do something. Then I remembered its Bobs birthday and the day I leap out of bed and take him a cuppa instead of him bringing me one. I know I am spoilt. Today he is my old man again, as for three weeks of the year we are the same age. No snow yet, it usually snows on his birthday.
Well our drives to Christies continue to be OK despite the heavy rain yesterday. We were held up on the way back because of a lorry breakdown on the slip road, hence a huge queue backlog but we still made it home for 4.30 time for a cuppa and I could go to Yoga. We had an early lunch before we went. However on Monday we waited an hour and yesterday we waited two hours before Bobs 10 minute treatment. There was some confusion as to wether he was meant to go to the weekly Drs clinic. They had us going backwards and forwards to different waiting areas. Each time we moved we it was assumed he had already had his daily treatment but he hadn’t. Eventually we saw one of the senior nurses on the clinical trial , who chatted to us organised a couple of routine tests. We were able to find out from hime that Bob is in the trial group and not in the control group which is good news. After our chat almost immediately we were fetched again and moved to a different waiting room with an apology for the delay. The treatment was then done in this different room. We think something had happened in our original suite as the 45 minutes delay we were told about initially got longer and longer. We don’t mind waiting but somewhere along the way we got the impression Bob had been missed and then it was suddenly realised.
Today is a much earlier appointment, 12.45. We will take sandwiches with us, plus lots of reading matter. I am working through a book of short stories in French, and am doing Duolingo French on my phone, Bob has his kindle.Over the next few weeks my french should come on a treat.
Have a good day all
