Whilst we are on pianos - I came across this lady Dorothy Donegan, a long time ago whilst looking for Lonnie. There's lots from her on Youtube. I've seen her described as "the best pianist you never heard of", and she seems to have a sense of humour too. Brief 'walk on' part for President Clinton.

Sorry, I listened to the lady and her playing seemed to me to be incoherent. Victor Borge without the script.

I think perhaps she was having fun, and hamming it up for the benefit of the VIP audience.
Might almost be described as "ironic"?

Try this for a more 'coherent' performance. I think there's a constant hint of mischief in her playing, which I like.

I suppose technically she's good but I'm afraid I still don't get it. She reminds me of Liberace's style.... :biggrin2:

Everyone has their own taste in music, nobody is right or wrong, just different. Here's mine.....

(Ignore the black list, just play on Youtube)
There are possibly more correct versions of the Variations, I like Gould's but the thing I like about this version is that Kempff was (I think) 78 when he recorded it.

Try this.... If you like it, look for the album 'Songs of Free Men'. Well worth a listen.

Actuall I prefer Woody Guthrie's take on the period and politics of the time.

I vaguely recall that we have discusssed Joe Hill before. It was so long ago and far away that it is impossible to get to the truth of the matter of his trial and execution. I seem to remember looking into it, and deciding that he probably did do the murder. and that you didn't totally disagree?

Paul Robeson - another charismatic, larger than life, badly treated black man, who could think for himself. Forerunner to Cassius Clay? Prodigious voice - remember Sanders of the River?

What did Mavis Wilton used to say again. . .

"You'll get pie in the sky when you die," he sang. "Well, that's a lie," responded the audience, singing the lyrics of Hill's best-known musical composition.
Said to be the origin of the phrase - well that's something I've learned today.

Bob made me read Wallace Stegner's book on Joe Hill, prior to that my main source was 'We shall be all' by Melvyn Dubovsky. Still not convinced either way but it's a good story and a good song.

I've just gone through most of this thread and enjoyed doing so. Interesting to see how it started and then developed. I was looking for the brass band thingy from Delph this year. I wanted to remind myself that fun could be had without organising a mass riot on Tik Tok and trying to steal stuff from Oxford Street, as has happened in London today. I found it eventually Delph if you want to watch it again.

Here's what they do in London for recreation. Oxford Street Tik Tok The people involved seem to have no fear of any consequences. Very depressing.

I agree with you David, very depressing. Reminds me of the conversation we had recently about reasons not to go to London......

I look at this website nearly every day, and I particularly enjoyed watching this artist at work today.

Very talented I'd say. . .

I agree. Amazing how a couple of strokes with something as simple and imprecise as a piece of burnt twig can immediately give two eyes..... That must be talent!

I have watched this recording many times now, and love it more each time. A film made about Lothersdale, just down the road from me, and narrated by Michael Parkinson. As Mrs Pickles says " I luv it up 'ere!"

I enjoyed that. Thanks for 'sharing' as they say now.

I watched most of it - then at the end when the chap says "we don't want invading" - I got a 'deja vu' feeling.
I'm sure I've seen that before. I'll look at it again. It raises so many things to think about.

Tithes to the Church, Thanking God for his mercy after WWI ! The elephant in the room (again).

Without opening it I think that's the film where he says the houses look as though they could withstand cannon balls.
Nice to see Ted Booth again.....
