You're all going to kick yourselves. It was called the sow box.
Now we need another object.

I shan't let it linger. I'll check on the state of p[lay at dinner time.

Sorry, I forgot to look. It's the the CI explosion box at the back of the boiler. The loose lids would be blown off and relieve pressure on the brickwork in the event of an explosion when the two streams of gas from the furnaces met in the sole flue at the back of the boiler. (If one furnace was recently fired and was producing a lot of smoke as the volatiles gassed off from the coal and the other was a hot clean fire the smoke could fire and explode when the two met.)
Next object?

Is it a sludge pump?

I can see why you thought that Gloria but no. You have seen it before and it is an essential piece of equipment if you are running a steam locomotive.

Is it for connecting to a water main to top up the loco's tank?

No Peter but you're in the right area, boilers and water.

Boiler feed injector?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Posted: 17 Apr 2024, 02:27

Correct, the blacked out name is 'Buffalo Injector'. Uses boiler pressure steam to inject cold water into the boiler.

No idea really, but it looks like it’s used to measure something, don’t think that’s rocket science 🤣

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

It's use involves measurement but it's a specialised object. You've seen it before.

Ventometer: an instrument for indicating the velocity of the wind, designed for use on target ranges.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

That's close enough for me Kev because I don't know its exact purpose. All I know is that it was made by Parker Hale in Birmingham and it was something to do with allowing for wind in the aiming of target rifles. Well done.
Now we need another object.
As the site is so slow I'll just shove an old one in to keep us going.

Four inch ruler for measuring horses 😂🤣

Special ruler for one job. Think of the reasons why it should be triangular in section like that..... You've all seen it before.

Is it a scale ruler? Different units of measurements on each side?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

No Kev. Standard Imperial measure. Consider what the ruler would do if set down on other than a flat surface.....

Think of how the rule would behave if set down on a cylindrical piece of steel..... I'll give it until dinnertime.
