You're so close Tom I have to give it to you. That's the whole point of the gloves, when the palm wears out from husking corn, you reverse hands and off you go again with new palms. That's what they are, Corn Husking Gloves.

Diamond cutter ?

Not quite Tom but once again I have to give it to you. I suspect you're thinking about a glass cutter. It isn't that. It's an industrial diamond set in the end of a piece of half inch steel and it's used for dressing grinding wheels to get a flat surface.....
Next one for shaving?

I've come across grinding wheel dressers before but never one like that,the ones I've seen are with 3 toothed wheels on the end of a bar that flatten the face on the grinding wheel.

They're the normal commercial ones but these are a lot more efficient and in my experience cheaper because one of these will outlast several of the others with the star wheels.

Are they correcting for land subsidence?

I suppose that's one way of putting it

They're correcting a chimney that is leaning by cutting out brickwork to encourage it back to perpendicular and then replacing the bricks they have taken out with new tight brickwork.
