You'd have a shaft rule. A triangular shape that automatically sits parallel with the centre of a shaft. These little clips allowed you to convert any steel rule.

Correct David, more accurately an acetylene lamp, the gas is produced by dripping water on to Carbide. A very clean bright flame.
