That's right Kev. I've had it for 40 years at least but didn't know what it was until I searched Google this morning. It is a German Springerle biscuit mould which was given to my parents in the late 1960s by the Duropal rep who Dad became friends with through his work at Arnold Laver's in Leeds.
Springerle biscuits were made for festive occasions.

Well the Germans kept that quiet didn't they? I'd never heard of them and I lived in Germany for two years.

Lots on Youtube though. I guess the nearest is Scottish shortbread. Some of the patterns look medieval.
