Exactly right Kev. I found it on page 24 of PE edition 1633. That's why I was expecting David to right on to it!
What's the next object?

I suppose it is Kev, it detects a potentially catastrophic situation and alleviates it but I have never heard anyone describe it as that. Big clue, associated with steam boilers.....

In a way Kev but only as part of its safety function. Heat triggers it!

Sprinkler head?
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Not a sprinkler head Kev but you and Peter are getting so close I am going to come clean and declare it a draw. It's a 'Fusible Plug' and is installed in the top of the firebox. As long as there is enough water to cover the crown of the firebox and therefore the plug, it remains intact but the core is made from an alloy that melts slightly above the boiling point of water so if the water level drops, the core melts before the crown has dried out and water and steam rush out through the plug into the firebox. This alerts the firebeater to the problem and at the same time damps or even extinguishes the fire.
Next for shaving?

There's a deathly hush. If nobody breaks the silence I shall come clean.

(Is it too easy?)

It's a nozzle in some ways Cathy. No Ian not part of the sprinkler system but you are all so close. You've seen it before...... (And not so long ago.....)
You're going to kick yourselves!
