Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
From the winery where your father was reared at Dubbo in NSW. You gave it to John Martinez who was a wine merchant and he used it in the lectures he did, I believe?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
You were getting close Ian but Kev has nailed it. The Eumalga property was reputedly the first vineyard and winery in NSW and my father was born there.
And yes, I brought two bottle bottoms back and gave one to John Martinez. Well researched. See THIS Wikipedia article.

What is it?

Bit too big for that Gloria, sorry, I should have given the size. It's about 6" in diameter and 2" thick.....

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Sorry Peter but no. It is the fact that it is soft that makes it useful........

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I suppose it could be a `blank' on which you stamped or compressed a design which could also result in it being thinner but having a larger diameter.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Sorry Gloria but no. Think what a solid, soft and smooth surface would be useful for in the shed! You've seen it before.
I've just seen Peter's response and he is very close indeed. The key word he has used is stamped.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I am surprised that nobody has come up with the answer. I shall come clean at dinnertime. Concentrate on a flat soft surface and Peter's use of the word stamped.....

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Sorry Gloria, far too complicated. This is dead simple. A flat, solid but soft surface. What would that be good for?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Melt the lead and pour it into a flat dish or similar, let it solidify and you'll have a perfectly flat surface. To be the foundation for a model engine perhaps?

Well done Gloria.... exactly right. You get a better impression and protect the punch. Particularly useful when cutting bolt holes in gaskets.
