That's what it is Ian, a broken wine bottle but it's a very special one and it's been on here before.... I shan't let it hang on for long. Clue, it started its life at Eumalga.....

From the winery where your father was reared at Dubbo in NSW. You gave it to John Martinez who was a wine merchant and he used it in the lectures he did, I believe?

You were getting close Ian but Kev has nailed it. The Eumalga property was reputedly the first vineyard and winery in NSW and my father was born there.

I suppose it could be a `blank' on which you stamped or compressed a design which could also result in it being thinner but having a larger diameter.

Sorry Gloria but no. Think what a solid, soft and smooth surface would be useful for in the shed! You've seen it before.
I've just seen Peter's response and he is very close indeed. The key word he has used is stamped.

Sorry Gloria, far too complicated. This is dead simple. A flat, solid but soft surface. What would that be good for?

For placing under a thin brass plate and stamping letters, numbers or designs on.

Melt the lead and pour it into a flat dish or similar, let it solidify and you'll have a perfectly flat surface. To be the foundation for a model engine perhaps?

Well done Gloria.... exactly right. You get a better impression and protect the punch. Particularly useful when cutting bolt holes in gaskets.
