Postman Pete's got it. The blades in a domestic paper shredder. It was only while clearing out some of my old dirty £20 notes that I realised than the metal bit would jam the cutters. So beware!

(Have you heard about the lady who ran across the road behind me whilst I was reversing into a parking spot?

I stopped the car, but she carried on and collided with the back of my car... she maintained she was perfectly all right and declined medical attention or going to A&E (until several hours later...). In the following days, she carried on as normal with her job.

In spite of three reliable witnesses who'd seen what happened and some CCTV footage of the incident my insurers paid out several thousands without contesting her claim for compensation...)

I'll wait awhile before the reveal on the bitmac (in case someone picks up on my latest clue).

Round thing , looks like a car steering wheel , but could be a cover over a turn-cock for water (unlikely ) , my first guess was a redundant coal-hole , but I didn't think many under pavement basement cellars for coal existed in Barnoldswick - with most stores being in the back alleyways.
