More work this morning on preparing for crankshaft turning. First I went through all three billets to make sure the centre holes were good and the centre for the crank pin was also a good one. Then I mounted the first shaft on the VM bed and made a trial cut with the cutter I sharpened yesterday. It was bloody terrible! I spent 15 minutes going through all my cutters and realised that I only have one 7/16" cutter, the one that has failed. I have two courses open to me. Completely re-sharpen the existing cutter or use a 1/2" cutter. I think I will end up doing the latter but first I will give the 7/16" cutter a chance. I am set up ready for a complete regrind tomorrow. Too big a job to do it this morning..... Besides, I am ready for my breakfast!

I am back from the Co-op and my tomatoes, onions, and garlic are in a casserole. Couldn't resist adding some pork loin steaks in Maple Sauce and two red peppers. I think it might be edible when I take it out.... :biggrin2:

I shall be in the shed first thing trying to rescue my 7/16" milling cutter. Failing that I shall use a half inch cutter. I don't know how things like milling cutters can vanish of their own volition!
Later I shall get a slab of belly pork cooking in the slow cooker. I have got a bottle of rough cider to use instead of chopped tomatoes.
Not a lot of chance of a walk seeing as how we are promised sleety showers later..... Deep Joy!

This morning's task was to find a milling cutter that works. As I suspected, I couldn't get the 7/16" cutter to cut and so I went looking for a good 1/2" one. I eventually found one and sharpened it before trying it out and it works. This took almost an hour. This is the penalty of milling on the cheap like I do. All my cutters are someone else's cast offs and came out of scrap yards. Never mind, I have a cutter that works and there is no rush! Now I want my breakfast.

Morning

I had my blood test in the morning but the practice nurse had phoned in sick so I couldn’t have my RSV vaccination so I will return in two weeks for that. I was a bit annoyed as I had had to miss french to go . I couldn’t take boxes to Wendy as she was in Leigh having a preop for an operation next week. It was too cold and wet to walk so out of the blue we decided to redecorate the front hall and toilet.

Its all looked rather shabby here after all the lovely fresh paint in France but the thought of starting all over again had been a little off putting. Anyway we went over to a wallpaper warehouse in Padiham recommended by our neighbour chose paper and paint, and I spent the rest of the afternoon stripping wallpaper, to be continued today. Its a fiddly little area so should keep me occupied for a bit. Its pilates and yoga in the studio this evening, have a good day all

An old friend of ours, who now lives in Ireland, arrived here yesterday evening to stay for a couple of days. Unfortunately he was suffering with a really bad cough which worsened overnight, together with a high temperature. He was understandably in a bit of a panic this morning when I got up at 6.30, talking about phoning an ambulance. I persuaded him to phone 111 and on their recommendation I have taken him to A and E at Airedale. Fingers crossed they will sort him out with antibiotics and instructions to take it easy. We might have a visitor for a bit longer than planned!

It's probably too late to worry about that now Cathy! He is booked on the ferry back to Dublin on Friday, so hopefully he will be well enough to travel by then.

So walls stripped in the hall, this afternoon the room with the toilet, tiny and difficult. Then wash down, fill, paint and Bob can do the wallpaper

I shall be in the shed this morning for an hour actually doing some cutting now I have found a milling cutter that works!
As for the rest of the day, I doubt if I will be tempted out by the weather so it could be a quiet day indoors keeping warm and eating regular hot meals!

Straight into cutting the excess metal out of the first crankshaft. This is careful boring work but still faster and easier than interrupted cutting in the lathe. Here we see the results of 45 minutes. One shaft cut out and the next one mounted in the mill ready for cutting tomorrow. Now for my breakfast!

Morning

I think I have a few years on you Stanley though I have to admit that after stripping the wallpaper and tidying up I was pretty tired. I had suggested to Bob we got someone in to do it but he wasn’t keen so it was back to the scraper and paint brush for me.

This morning we are off to the cemetery with flowers, being Dads birthday ( and someone else's I think Stanley) on the 14 th. I can’t go on Friday being an art day. I am meeting someone there too. I offered to do some research for someone in Burnley, having connected through the Burnley genealogy facebook page. We have done a lot of work on her tree and have finally ironed out some of the problems. Its the first tree I have researched that has been linked directly to a workhouse. Anyway it transpires we are 4 th cousins though we are not sure how but DNA says we are, and one of the people we have been researching is buried just 8 graves away from my family plot. Such coincidences. This afternoon we are taking boxes to Wendy, this evening is zoom pilates. Paint wash down will be postponed till Thursday. Have a good day all

Sue, I had my great grandfather and one of his daughters in the Burnley workhouse, grandma was alive then but not in with him. Grandma never mentioned any of that and she would have been of an age to remember it.

Our visitor was called back into Airedale an hour after Col had brought him home yesterday. An anomaly had been discovered by his blood tests and there is a suspicion that he has had a heart attack at some point. He was kept in overnight for observation and we are waiting to hear if he will be discharged today. I'm trying not to think about what happens if he can't get in his car and drive back to his home near Kenmare in Southern Ireland. He has daughters down in Bury St Edmunds but I doubt if he will want them told about what's happening. Airedale is looking after him very well, we think he is now an Irish citizen having moved there around Brexit time, so they will probably be able to claim for his care.

This was a family of 5 children and their mother in May 1899, the father had died in the March. He had a heart attack and died whilst looking for work in Burnley Market. It was a very sad story that I even found as a newspaper report. As for being related that is a huge mystery. I wondered if one of theses 5 boys married a daughter from one of my families in Burnley. There were a lot of daughters . The parents were from Scotland so any family connection would seem to be after they moved to Burnley circa 1890

45 minutes of uneventful patient milling got us to this point, another crankshaft blank gutted and ready for eccentric turning. The cutter didn't need any attention and cut wonderfully well and I am set up for cutting the third blank tomorrow. I deserve my breakfast.
