As is my wont I shall be in the shed first thing doing useful things connected with making three crankshafts. I am being ultra careful, I have plenty of time and don't want any slip-ups! I have just realised that I made a mistake in that I didn't empty my recycle bin at the last opportunity, it's almost full and that's where the swarf has to go. I've just had a look and I have been lucky, it's brown bin day next Monday so I have been saved by the bell!
The weather forecast is fair so there is a chance of a walk later. I shall see how the spirit moves me after second sleep.....

This morning was setting up for turning the blanks down to finish size. I am being ultra careful and want to turn one leg down to a size that will fit the bore of the chuck so that I can grip in in such a way as to take all the torque off the offset crank pin. In effect that means turning this first leg down from two inches to an inch and three quarters. I am rubbish at centring stock in independent jaws so this took over half an hour! But it's done and I am started. Now for my breakfast!

Morning
I had a good morning shopping with Erin yesterday though I was shocked at the lack of age related clothes for an up and coming 11 year old girl. Not clothes too old for her, quite the opposite. Most available clothes I regarded as clothes for a 9 year old with 11 to 14 year old age tags. We did find what we wanted , a rather nice ‘bomber jacket ‘ but had to pay the price tag to go with it, and being an avid reader we also bought her the latest book in the range of books she reads. Again a hefty price tag as it was only available in hard back, but worth it to see the delight on her face. Whilst shopping Bob took Adam round the, newly renovated Town Hall. He had never been in before and thoroughly enjoyed it. The day was rounded off with lunch out when Erin chatted extensively with Wendy and I. What a delight.
Today the forecast is reasonable, dry, cloud and sun so we are going out for the day. I think we intend going to Ribchester . We also want some masking tape and white gloss so when Bob is out on Sunday I can paint the small amount of gloss paint in the bathroom. Most of the room is tiled from floor to ceiling and the ceiling and loft hatch were done recently so this room upgrade should be fairly rapid.
Have a good day all

I'm glad to hear that the Town Hall has had some attention, it's a wonderful building. I once took the temporary head of what was then the National Heritage Memorial Fund to look at the Town Hall and tried to get him to fund protection of the encaustic tiles in the foyer. He was very enthusiastic but I don't know if he ever forked out!
History of NHMF
The National Heritage Memorial Fund’s predecessor, The National Land Fund, was set up in 1946 to purchase land and buildings as a ‘thank-offering for victory, and a war memorial’.
However, the fund remained largely unused and in 1977 there was public outcry over the sale of the historic Mentmore Towers and its contents. On the death of the 6th Earl of Rosebery, the government had declined to buy the Grade I listed country house and its contents in lieu of death duties. As a result, the precious art and objects were sold through a public auction.
The loss sparked the passing of a new National Heritage Act in 1980, which launched the National Heritage Memorial Fund as a ‘memorial to those who have died for the UK’. It was given an independent board of Trustees and allocated the money remaining in the National Land Fund as well as an allowance of grant-in-aid.
This new fund was to build on, and expand, the legacy of its predecessor. It would make grants available to help UK organisations acquire, maintain or preserve any land, building or structure, or any object or collection of outstanding scenic, historic, aesthetic, architectural, scientific or artistic interest to the nation.
The word ‘memorial’ remains in the title as a reminder that this fund remains true to the original vision of creating the finest of memorials to those who have given their lives for the UK.
The NHMF continues to act as the fund of last resort, supporting some of our nation’s greatest treasures when it matters most.
NHMF and The National Lottery Heritage Fund
In 1994, the NHMF and its trustees were appointed distributor of the heritage share of the National Lottery’s funds for Good Causes, which it now operates through The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The Heritage Fund is the largest dedicated funder of heritage in the UK. It offers opportunities for conserving the nation’s heritage with emphasis on placing people and communities at the heart of projects.
((What the government site forgets to say is that the original capital was the proceeds of the sale of war surplus and it was the Labour government that founded it.)

I'm back from my walk and a pop-in to the Co-op for a couple of cupboard fillers. It's a nice sunny morning out there, not exactly warm but certainly not the bone-chilling cold we have had lately out of the East! It's nice to sit down.....

I shall be making swarf in the shed first thing. The weather forecast is dire, wind and rain, so I think I'll be staying indoors. No walking for exercise today!

I carried on from yesterday turning one leg of the shaft down until it fitted in the bore of the chuck. Then I reversed it making sure that I grabbed the other leg by the end of the shaft that will eventually be the shaft's web. This means I can now take a good cut on the shaft secure in the knowledge I am not putting any damaging torque on the 3'8" crank pin. I will be able to reverse it to finish the cut on the other leg of course. I have taken the stringy swarf made by the light cuts out and put it in the recycle bin which will be emptied tomorrow making plenty of room for what will follow. Now I deserve my breakfast!

Morning
Stanley the tiles have been preserved, in fact all windows, tiles and wall decorations have been preserved. The renovation of the Town Hall was funded partly by the Heritage Fund, it was a complete renovation and not a renewal or replacement except for things like facilities, toilets, restaurant etc.
We had a good day in Ribchester yesterday, a short walk by the river ( we had to give up on a 3 mile circular because of very muddy paths across fields) . The weather was lovely apart from a chill wind at times. It was nearly 5 when we got back home.
My plans for today are bedding changing, a small bit of ironing then painting the door frame and airing cupboard frame in the bathroom, thus making this room look better. The rest is tiled and the door is pine and only needs oiling and not painting. Bob will be at the park. He is doing alternate Sundays at the moment but full reopening will be after April 1 st
Its due to be wet and windy, have a good day all

Glad Ribchester was good Sue. When I was at Pendle Heritage we did some work with the museum there... As I remember it it was about retired Roman soldiers settling there.....
We are forecast to have the rain as well but it hasn't arrived yet.

I shall be in the shed first thing for an hour of occupational therapy! Not sure about the rest of the day. I shall see how I feel after second sleep.

I set up yesterday so straight into turning one leg of the shaft down far enough to fit in the bore of one of my smaller chucks for final operations. You can see how it compares to the other two, it's ready to go forward but I want to get the other two to the same stage. I finished this morning's stint by cleaning up my chips and swarf and putting them in the brown recycling bin which is out in the back street ready for collection and emptying this morning so plenty of room for the swarf from the next two shafts. A good morning's work, I am after my breakfast now!

Morning
French at Haslingden this morning, then after lunch a second coat of paint on the door frame in the bathroom. This evening is zoom yoga. It was a non stop busy day yesterday as Claire called round for an hour or two before she went to see the Rugby match at Spotland. I have been making a top for her and it needed a fitting session but she also just wanted to chat. We don’t often get the opportunity when its just the two of us. Thus the painting, and ironing took longer than expected.
Its a fine morning but I believe it is going to rain later. Have a good day all

Morning Sue.... We have had a light spatter of rain as forecast but I don't expect any more until this evening.... Nice that you had time with Claire.... I hope the day goes well so that you can get the painting out of the way.
I am obviously back up after second sleep, the recycle bin has been emptied and is back in place in the yard so I have plenty of room for chips from the shafts. I have load of washing going and am going to treat my self by cooking some savoury cabbage. At the moment the weather is bright overcast and dry with a moderate wind.

I shall be in the shed for my Occupational Therapy first thing this morning and all I can see on the horizon after second sleep is cutting my pork belly up and putting it in the slow cooker with the usual onions, garlic and spices! We are forecast to have rain in the late morning so don't hold your breath for any walking for exercise!

This morning was a preparation morning. I have prepared the next shaft blank for bedding in the bore of the chuck and set it up ready to start cutting this leg down to 1/2" ready for bringing to the same stage as the first. These cuts were light and careful because the torque was being taken by the 3/8" crank pin so I am glad I have got away with them! Then I cleaned up the lathe and the floor. We are ready for tomorrow and now I want my breakfast.

Morning
Bob did the second coat of gloss whilst I was at French leaving us free to go for a nice walk yesterday afternoon. It was very pleasant in the sun but soggy underfoot. We just did a short 3 mile circuit up the old railway track to the lodge and back along the road. We debated extending it to include some of the old tracks over the moors but it was so wet underfoot we decided not to .
This morning I have my RSV vaccination then we are taking the unused rolls of wallpaper back to Padiham where we were promised a refund on unopened rolls within 30 days of buying them. We shall also return the original tin of grey paint that was the wrong colour.
This afternoon I shall sew , then its pilates and yoga in the studio this evening. Have a good day all

As usual, a positive report Sue. I hope the day goes well for you. As you can see I've had a good hour in the shed and now I'm going to enjoy my breakfast and a listen to R4 news (Although that won't be enjoyable!).

I left the workpiece all set up ready for turning and only did one thing before starting. I changed my indexable cutter to a negative rake one that had the advantage of never having been used. I used that to attack this leg of the shaft with 50 thou cuts and got about half the metal taken away. I swept the floor in case the shed goes on TV! Now I want my breakfast and second sleep.

Well that was another doorframe painted yesterday , the one in the ensuite. Its funny how some of our white gloss has gone really yellow over time and some hasn’t. Doing this one yellowed door frame in an otherwise fully tiled room has made all the difference. We took our remaining rolls of wallpaper back to Padiham and our faulty tin of paint and got a nice sizeable refund which will go towards painting the kitchen when we get back from France. We hope to do that over Easter .
Today I have a zoom art workshop all day with Jeremy Ford, this evening a zoom pilates class. That will be my day, a wet one outside I think. Have a good one

Neither do I Sue, but hopefully we will be able to find it.
