Armoured knights raised their visors to identify themselves when they rode past their King. This then developed into the modern military salute.
Found this funny... The buttons on a man's jacket cuff were originally intended to stop servants from wiping their noses on the sleeves of their uniforms. Ouch!

Not too sure about that one Cathy, though I have heard it before. If you think about it the buttons are at the back of the sleeve and wouldn't interfere with nose wiping. What I do know is that at least one man I knew had the buttons made with proper buttonholes so that when needed he could unbutton the cuff and turn it back to keep it clean when he was doing anything that could soil the jacket. I asked my tailor and he said that all jackets used to be made like that once of a day.

Many scientists now swapping camp on the myth of Global Warming, it is now proven beyond doubt that the 0.4 rise in temperature which plateaued in 1997 has not changed since then. The scientists still insisting it is happening have worn down their nails scratching their heads. lots of folks must be feeling a bit silly, unless they have been enriched by this fraud.

This was a a very brief summary of a 19 page document I received on saturday gone. Unfortunately I have no permission to republish it. There were some very eminent Scientists, and scientific establishments mentioned in it who have changed their thinking and now are certain that the program designed to study the possibility of Global Warming is fataly flawed, and there are no established reasons to believe our climate is changing in any fashion that is not normal.

Remember Tony Blair and his claims for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? `Secret information' is always very useful, like fairy dust. You can pass on fairy dust to other people; if they ask how it works just tell them it's secret. By the way, I've got a great little machine here for detecting explosive devices, it'll only cost you a few thousand pounds a time. No, I can't tell you how it works, it's a secret. Sorry, I can't waste any more time discussing this, I've got to get back to writing my latest secret reports about how asbestos and tobacco are safe...

At no time have I used the word secret, There are grave concerns to the validity of any thing said on this site if the people who post can't read a simple message and understand it. The document came from an oxbridge university, and was passed to me by a person who Knows my interest in the subject, he has not asked me to treat this as confidential but the understanding not to is tacit.

Grave concerns by whom? It may help if you try to understand that all of us view things in a different light. And just like you, we all have our own opinions which, we can usually air without verbal aggression.

hartley, its pretty clear that people on this site want more than rhetoric when such significant issues as global warming are raised.Facts and source material are pretty vital to such matters. Some of us remember a former member who tried to convince us that he had it " on good authority" that the crown jewels had been stored at Skipton Castle during the war. He would not identify his source or any further evidence to substantiate his claim.
Don't get upset and hit out if you are challenged, chill out and lets get on with life. Nolic

The latest data from Kantar Worldpanel shows the Co-op’s sales rose 0.2pc in the 12 weeks to July 7, ending four consecutive months of decline.
However, the retailer’s market share fell from 6.6pc to 6.4pc and its sales growth was the lowest of all the UK’s leading food retailers.
In contrast, discounters Aldi and Lidl grew sales by 29.8pc and 10.9pc respectively, while Waitrose grew sales by 10.9pc.
Out of the so-called “big four” supermarkets, Sainsbury’s grew sales by 3.8pc, although its markets share remained flat at 16.5pc.
Tesco sales increased 1.8pc, although this accelerated to 3.7pc in the last four weeks

Perhaps Hartley's source of information is not as restricted as he makes it out to be. I suspect that the claims he is making are a heavily biased mis-interpretation of a recent paper from Alexander Otto and colleagues at the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University, published in the journal `Nature Geoscience' (Energy budget constraints on climate response, by Otto et al., 2013, Vol.6, pages 415–416, doi:10.1038/ngeo1836, published online 19 May 2013).
http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/v6/n ... o1836.html
The BBC's story based on the paper, `Climate slowdown means extreme rates of warming "not as likely"', is here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22567023
The gist of the story is Otto suggests that short-term projections for temperature rise should be pared back a bit but nothing has changed about long-term projections. Of course, this conclusion about short-term projections is the view of the authors of one study and there are other, equally well-respected, scientists who disagree.
Note the comment from Dr Otto at the end of the BBC story. He was asked: "Is there any succour in these findings for climate sceptics who say the slowdown over the past 14 years means the global warming is not real?". His reply was: "None. No comfort whatsoever".

Sorry tizer you are not even warm, this document has never been published, and none of those you mention have been a party to it, it does refer to the temperature rise as predicted by models, but uses only 17 words on this subject. My gut instinct is this will become public soon when the people who have misled us will have found a way to save face.

If the document had anything of value to contribute to the claims that climate change is not caused by human activity it would have been published in a reputable scientific journal and would have been welcomed by climate scientists. Scientists are always pleased to see new information when it's based on evidence obtained using sound techniques, regardless of whether or not it agrees with their own hypotheses.

It's called peer revue and is based on the principle that no hypothesis is worth a candle unless it has been tested to destruction. This is the only test and hints about secrets can be discarded until this happens.

Grumpy old man mode here, the warm weather has attracted many people out onto the lanes and canal towpath. What I cant understand is why lots of people have to walk around listening to music, totally oblivious to their surroundings and any approaching cyclists. I have a bell on my bike but it does not seem to compete with whatever is blasting into their eardrums and quite often if approaching from behind you have to almost stop to sneak round often with mutters of "didn't hear you coming"! Good job they don't allow horses on the cut bank anymore, they could easily get trampled underfoot.
