I shall be in the shed with my swarf first thing this morning. After second sleep I am not sure. All that is certain is that there are no calls on my social calendar!
If you remember I gave in to the house feeling cold and advanced the heating a fraction a couple of days ago. I think I got it right, much better and not too warm.... Sometimes we have to give in to the inevitability of old age!

This morning I spent an hour on turning the fourth blank down to 2" and cleaning Mrs Harrison up. I have made a lot of very hot small chips which are great for cleaning up but deadly if one gets on your skin as they spray off the cutter. Even worse if you got one in your eye so I used my head and wore the full face shield. No good being wise after the event when you are explaining what happened to the paramedics! After I'd finished I gave the visor a good wash in hot soapy water so that when I use it next I will be able to see better. Now for breakfast!

Morning

It was a beautiful day yesterday which we spent down at Lulworth cove and walking over the headland to Durdle Door. We browsed the pebbles on the beach but saw few fossils of note. Today we are driving down to Swanage and taking a railway ride. On the way back we shall stop off at Corf Castle. The forecast is very good, it should be a nice day., have a good one everyone

It looks beautiful Sue. I'm devouring various crime series on my Kindle. (It's easy reading when I'm lying awake at night.) At the moment it's The Dorset Crime Series by Rachael McLean which is giving me an introduction to the area! Murders all over the county.

Looks nice Sue, we enjoyed Dorset when we went a few years ago. Some of my maternal relatives are from that part of the UK, Wimborne and around that area, my maternal grandma, Christiana's family.

Yes its a beautiful place and I am amazed we have never been before. Its so quiet and you feel detached from the rest of the country and its problems .

Morning Sue, it does look nice. One of the few counties I haven't been to.....
I'm just back up after second sleep to bright sun and a warm house. I was just thinking how lucky I was as I woke, warm, pain free and as far as I know nothing major wrong with me beyond the usual suspects. Wonderful.....

This morning I shall be in the shed early doors getting set up for milling out the main of the metal that has to be removed from the blank to create the crank pin. At some point I shall be cutting my hair.
Well pharmacy have thoroughly confused me by asking me to book for a Covid Booster and flu jab when as far as I know I already have one. I think a walk up there and a conversation is the answer!

A busy morning. The first thing I did was vacuum the floor in the shed to get rid of all the tiny pieces of swarf I was treading all over the house! That done I marked all the blanks up ready for the next stage which is to mill out of the centre enough of the meat to make it easier to turn the crank pin. Anyone who has ever endured the interrupted cuts with over extended parting tools knows that the less metal that has to be cut out the better. I put a centre in each blank that will be used to locate the piece in the lathe offset ready for turning. Then I took the vise off the lathe and cleaned the table. I mounted the first shaft direct on the bed found a 1/2" end mill and mounted that in the mill and then marked the shaft for centre and depth of cut. I am ready now to start milling which I know will be a test of patience but one that is well worth it. Now I want my breakfast.

Morning

After three glorious days it is very cloudy this morning and due to remain so all day. Todays plans are to go to Kingston Lacy in Wimborne today, a National Trust house with gardens and parkland. I feel lots more walking coming on. Have a good day all.

The weather won't be bad enough to spoil your day Sue. I was fascinated by the name Durdle Door and looked up what Eilert Ekwall had say about it....
Surprisingly he let me down, no mention..... Perhaps he doesn't regard it as a place name, just the local name for the rock arch. I see the etymology of that in Wikipedia is.....
There is a dearth of early written records about the arch,[12] though it has kept a name given to it probably over a thousand years ago. In the late 18th century there is a description of the "magnificent arch of Durdle-rock Door", and early 19th-century maps called it "Duddledoor" and "Durdle" or "Dudde Door". In 1811 the first Ordnance Survey map of the area named it "Dirdale Door". Durdle is derived from the Old English thirl, meaning to pierce, bore or drill, which in turn derives from thyrel, meaning hole. Similar names in the region include Durlston Bay and Durlston Head further east, where a coastal stack suggests the existence of an earlier arch, and the Thurlestone, an arched rock in the neighbouring county of Devon to the west. The Door part of the name probably maintains its modern meaning, referring to the arched shape of the rock; in the late 19th century there is a reference to it being called the "Barn-door", and it is described as being "sufficiently high for a good-sized sailing boat to pass through it.

Thank you for your research Stanley, but whenever I see an image of Durdle Door , in my mind I always see and think of a Sea Horse bending down and dipping its nose into the water. 😊
.
Does anyone else see it?

I didn't Cathy but I just went back and yes, it's obvious isn't it!
I am just back from a walk round town to sort out my flu jabs and it was so nice I had half an hour on traffic duty in the sun. Back home now and back to doing stuff!

I shall be in the shed early doors with a clean start to the milling phase of crankshaft making. There are no demands for shopping or on my social calendar so a walk in the sun is on the cards later.

This morning was an hour spent patiently chewing out the meat of the centre of the crankshaft to lessen the purgatory of intermittent cuts and eccentric turning. Well worth the time and effort. I have one shaft cut out and the next for shaving mounted in the mill. Same again tomorrow but right now the task is breakfast!

Morning

I always think of an elephant….Stanley I found out the same as I was also fascinated by the name. There is a similar structure on the Normandy coast.

Yesterday turned out to be another beautiful day with today forecast the same if not better. We visited Kingston Lacy and walked our feet off. Afterwards we went to Wimborne where we found the Minster to be particularly interesting and historic. Today is our last day here and we are visiting a fashion museum in Blandford forum , it is also market day there. I think that leaves us with the afternoon so we may have a local walk before we pack. Have a good day all

I'm back from a short walk to the Co-op, there's always something needed for the shelves! Lovely morning out there but a bit too cool for sitting in the shade so I declined traffic supervision.

There's the Royal Signals museum too just out of the town on the camp. I think Bob might find that more interesting.

I was stationed there for a few years around 1970. I doubt the town itself has changed much since then. Here's a little anecdote.

I had my haircut in the town by a barber called Reggie Legge. He was a good man and actually had an artificial leg. He was a local Councillor, and a good talker. He told me that the proposal to change the name of the town from Blandford to Blandford Forum was taken near the end of a late meeting . This was in the days when pubs shut at 10.30 pm prompt, and the members were anxious to finish in time to get a drink in. The motion was passed - without realising the full consequences of changes in signage, stationery etc. I think they slightly regretted it afterwards.

I shall be in the shed milling the meat out of my second crankshaft blank. Not too sure after that, depends on the weather and how I feel. :biggrin2:

This morning I sharpened both the 1/2" cutters I have selected for this job and then got on with cutting the meat out of the second blank. Once I'd done that I vacuumed my chips up and set up the third blank for gulleting tomorrow. Now I am after my breakfast.
