It's an interesting sign, when it's all solved can you tell us what it is all about?

I would consider both PanBiker and Stanley to be correct. Some old maps show it as Cross Gates.
The lettering "S J E" has been attributed to John (James) & Elizabeth Swinglehurst. The Swinglehurst family were very big land owners at this time with ownership from Barrowford -Blacko -Foulridge. In the early 1700's they lived at Park House Barrowford, now the Heritage Centre built 1661.
Disclaimer. I'm not a local historian just the second part of Stanley's avatar.
For those interested in the Swiglehurst history. http://www.swindlehursts-united.co.uk/S ... owland.htm

Bodger's pub sign. I'll leave the translation to the Latin scholars, but I think the Landlord was poking fun at the customers.

Time for one more "where is it" until someone thinks of another.
Located in Barrowford. A clock about 3 ft in diameter. I don't know its history I was hoping someone would tell me about it.

I seem to remember vaguely there was a clock tower in Victoria Park, Barrowford. I suppose a leftover relic from the days when public clocks were necessary as ordinary people did not have timepieces of their own.

Re. Cross Gaits. It's spelt 'gates' on the 1580 map but they weren't too bothered about spelling even then. As two roads crossed at the junction (look for the remains of the old one across the road from the pub) the name almost certainly referred to the roads.
Cathy, it was a joke, tomorrow never comes so the free ale was always on the day after you asked for it.
No suggestions for clock face but I've seen a working clock somewhere in a park that was in a flower bed and had flowers planted in the hands.

Thanks Stanley and Bodger. Something tells me the Inn owner was actually thinking pounds and pence.

First, thanks to Bodger for the translation.

The Clock. Built into the Grange House at the junction of Barnoldswick Rd and Gisburn Rd. Not an easy place to spot if you are travelling in a car. For some reason you tend to have other things on your mind at this dangerous junction. As I understand it the house was built by Christopher Grimshaw around 1840 but not really knowing its history it looks like it has been much modified since then. The clock MAY have been originally installed in the old Higherford Mill that was once owned by Christopher Grimshaw but this is pure speculation.
I would much appreciate any information on this house and the clock.

There used to be a clock on the row of cottages over the water from Nelson and Colne College. Have a pic but can't find it.

Stanley, I think you mean this one. Cold wet day for taking pictures, not too good I'm afraid.

If you want pictures of buildings close to a public road, you can get piccies without leaving the computer :

https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.845254 ... ,7.77&z=18

https://maps.google.co.uk/?ll=53.858304 ... -0.15&z=17

Just saves you going out in the rain to take a picture ;)

Pluggy, I do exactly that. I do a street view of the area I'm interested in then do a walk round tour. Saves a lot of shoe leather. Unfortunately, a lot of the detail is high up and out of focus in Google. The end product is that it gets me off my backside into the open air and the pictures I take are my copyright to give away as I choose.

I like a good day for taking pictures. I like the sun to be shining for the ones I put on the Visit Barnoldswick site!

Here's one which shouldn't be too much of a mystery.

1890 pic looks something like the stretch just the other side of Salterforth heading towards Foulridge. Where the moorings are at the bottom of Salterforth Drag.

I would agree, just the other side of the Anchor, not many stretches where the banking is so high. Some good fish on that length.

The centre portion of a metering valve. The range of holes being set to control the flow of gas / steam through a supply pipe. Suitable pressure tappings on inlet / outlet of the plate would allow the flow quantity to be calculated.
